Continued from Gardner.

Continue on the frontage road southeast of I-55.

AS the Interstate veers away, note how the 4 lane alignment of the 40s got reverted back to a 2 lane alignment by abandoning one set of lanes.

Continue straight at the intersection with Old Mazon Rd.

Dwight

As the former 4-lane alignment veers away from the railroad, a choice of alignments is available:

1926-1946 post 1947

Dwight got bypassed as Route 66 was contructed.

Left onto Brewster Rd. to stay with the railroad.

Left onto Union St. (IL-47), at the T intersection.

Cross the Conrail railroad (east-west running).

Next right as Union St. (IL-47) turns south across the railroad in order not to cross the railroad.

Next slight right (=west) onto Wauponsie St.

Route 66’s predecessor ran next to the railroad (mostly undrivable nowadays), but it has some very interesting buildings.

Turn left (=south) on Franklin St.

Turn right (=west) on Mazon Ave., avoiding the railroad.

Turn next left (=southwest) on West Main St.

Former Keeley Institute

Dwight Depot

The first national bank

Right on Prairie Ave.

Left on Wauponsie St.

Follow Wauponsie St. as it curves south.

The Marathon Oil Station

Old Route 66 Family Restaurant

Cross IL-17 (Mazon Ave.) to Old Route 66 (=south).

The Feddersen’s Pizza Garage

The Carefree Motel is now a private residence.

Right onto Odell Rd.

Behind you on Odell Rd is a pre Route 66 alignment (1918).

Turn left onto old highway 66 at the southern end of town and continue southwest.

The original bypass got bypassed even further in 1947.

Continue straight on US-66, which becomes Old Highway 66 as it crosses IL-47.

Rejoin at the intersection of old highway 66 and Odell Rd. heading southwest on Old IL-66.
