Whiting Bros Sign / Abandoned Place in New Mexico
The Whiting Brothers chain of gas stations and motels was launched when Art and Ernest Whiting began selling gasoline at a station in St. Johns, Arizona in 1917. With expansion into Winslow and Flagstaff they initiated a standardized design and color scheme for stations to ensure brand recognition. At its peak the company managed more than 100 stations in the southwest. In 1955, with establishment of the Whiting Brothers Deluxe Motel located at 902 West Hopi Drive in Holbrook, Arizona, the company launched a motel chain.
