For anyone traveling on Historic Route 66 in Arizona be sure to pull off in Seligman. Then for a great history lesson stop in and visit at Delgadillo's Barber Shop and have a chat with the owner. Thef nor the dreamiest, best tasting 1950-60's style chocolate malts, visit the Snow Cad Drive-In next door. Both establishments will be remembered for many years to come and were the highlight of my 4/97 trip from Victorville to Flagstaff.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is on the verge of despoiling a substantial remaining stretch of Historic Route 66 just East of Albuquerque in Tijeras, NM with a proposed giant Supercenter on NM 14 to be accessed from Interstate 40. This may be the coupe de grace for tiny Tijeras which has already been seriously impacted by I-40 which replaced the "Mother Road" several years ago. As a 11 year old my parents moved from Hinsdale Ill a suburb of Chicago and drove down route 66 to Springfield Mo. I lived there until I graduated from high school. I never really made the connection living there about route 66, but drove on it to joplin mo and back several times, as well as up and down it while living in springfield. It wasn't until 1993 coming back from las Vegas that I took the northern route from kingman thru albuquerque N.M. on my way back to Austin. I use to watch the show as a child, but was too young to realize that I would travel on it several times thru my life. I appreciate being able to trace the parts I rode on and personally drove on, memories are a good way to realize you were enjoying life and didn't realize it at the time.

Being an outdoor person the idea of driving coast to coast in US has always fascinated me. People tell me that on stretches of Route 66 you'll see the America that was, the old world charm and the away-from-it-all experience. I am planning to drive the route (Yes! Chicago to LA) and would appreciate all information from the folks who've made this trip. In essence, what kind of car would be most practical, recommended places to stay and how much time would I need to complete this trip. Thanks and look forward to meeting up with some of you when I do the trip. cheers

My first Rt 66 trip was in 1966. I was 17 living in Cleveland, Ohio. Myself and a couple friends were driving around in my '55 Pontiac when some Beach Boys tune came on the AM radio and we all agreed a trip to California was in order. We left that night. We picked up the MotherRoad in St. Louis and with minor variances travelled it all the way to the Left Coast. In June 1997 me and a friend mounted up on our motorcycles and rode to Staunton, Illinois from Gainesville, Fl for a weekend camping trip and really enjoyed riding the old road again.

I think Americans need to have the innocence and dreams that we did then. In search of my own and my countries innocence, my wife and I plan to fly to Chicago, buy a brand new Corvette, and spend the next 3 or 4 months traveling Route 66 and see all the sights on and off the road. My homepage is about Michigan Folklore and Legends. It is fairly new, but is pretty much in it's completed stages. I would love to travel down as much of the old U.S. 66 route before I die. It is so facinating of a story. I have read some stories which have peaked my present interest in it. Nice page also. One of the best, if not the best in my opinion, for a U.S. 66 homepage. THANX A LOT.

Just did a 6,000 mile Detroit/Trinity Site, N-M/Grand Canyon road trip. The prime reason was to visit Trinity Site, N-M where the world's first A-bomb was exploded in 1945. It's open only 2 days a year becuz it's on the White Sands Missile Range about 75 miles south of Albuqurque. If U go GET THERE EARLY (930 AM. As we left there was a Disneyworld-long lineup to get in. We drove a lot of old-66 between Joplin, Mo and Williams, Ariz. The best 66 food we had was at Pop Hicks' place in Clinton, Okla- chicken-fried steak. For a "re-created place" the 66 Diner in Albuquerque was excellent. The County Line Restaurant in Albuquerque is also excellent-plus. We found one of the great places to mail postcards back home, becuz of its postmark-- Continental Divide, N-M just east of Gallup on a little piece of crumbling 66 off I-40. I think the Post Office is the only thing open there. We went to the ghost town of Glenrio, Texas/N-M off Texas Exit-0 of I-40. The state line marker was gone, but if U look closely at the pavement the color changes slightly right where the border should be, just west of the abandoned "First in Texas" Motel. 66 goes a little way into N-M then vanishes into the weeds. Sad. But, as we watched busy local traffic on old 66 in Clinton, Okla...site of the excellent Route-66 Museum, I realized that if the old road hadn't been changed there would be a 1,000 mile backup of cars & trucks. The US gov't would have had to build I-44 & I-40 anyway and just call them "Route-66". The old road is now an uncurated living museum of a million suprises and a million more memories and people. Speaking of which, I found the folks in Holbrook, Ariz really nice. If U get to southern Ariz, check out Historic Tombstone & discover the real story behind the famed O-K Corral Gunfight. My impression- "It didn't begin with Rodney King".

I found your site to be very well designed and diverse, however much of the information pertaining to associations, publications, etc. is out of date. I would encourage all who see incorrect addresses, etc., to let it be known. Excellent job overall.

Then to imperial valley, North thru Joahua Tree and finally thru the Mohave N/S route returning to Vegas. Last year drove Ok CIty to Needles in rental car. in 95 drove our 56 Plymouth Wagon from Grand Rapids to OkCity and return. Sorta fell in love with the ole road. I, along with three other people, just finished a project for National History Day. Our topic was Route 66. We presented our project at a regional competition, and then at state competition. Our hard work and knowledge of Route 66 helped us to get first place at state. We are now moving on to compete in Washington D.C. We are only 16 years old and therefore do not have all the money we need to make the trip. Please get a hold of me if you want to contribute. Thank you. Oh, yes, we also got aour kicks on Route 66 in Arizona.

I have traveled Rt 66 many times over the years as an over the road truck driver. Mostly through parts of N.M.,Az.,& Cal. The photos in this sight bring back a lot of good memories.I don't know what it is, but to anyone who has run it, it seems to have some sort of " magical hold" on them. I made a habit as most drivers do of frequenting the same places every trip.( I did Cal. turnarounds out of Pa.) Some of these places are in the pictures. I haven't been out there in over 10 years and you know, it never seems to change and yet it does. The magic of Rt66 as in most of the old highways will be remembered long after the last bit of blacktop is covered by sand, weeds, vines or grass. It will never die.

I was born in 1940 and joined the Army in 1957. Durring this time I traveled between Okla City where we, my brother and sister lived with our father, to California 7 times. Always on Hyway 66. We had a terible accident wiht the car rolling over 3 times and comming to a rest upside down. That was on the first trip I remember. Sence that time I always thought of Hyway 66 as a killer Hyway. Now years later having freinds and customers come from Europe and telling me how much they would like to travel the "old road" I have changed my oppion about Route 66. I am now very happy to have been able to live a part of such a great piece of Americana. Now I think about some of the things that happened on the trips and although they were not all happy memories they are memories of things that others can only try to live. I wish Good Luck, and safe driving to all who would like experiance a piece of the "Old Road"

First exposure to US66 was 6/95. While on I44 in OK, saw Vinita exit marked as 60/66/69, denoting all roads as US HIGHWAYS! Fully 11 years after the termination of official US Highway designation. Our vacation was to Colorado/New Mexico, and we exited there just to get a glimpse of good ol' Main Street USA! Me and my longtime friend then engaged in seemingly endless discussion of how fantastic it would be to run as much of the Mother Road as possible, as we trekked westward on what we later learned was in fact old 66 herself! (even though the markings ended with the exit) To see the old US Highway shield still pay homage to the most famous highway in the world (next to perhaps the Autobahn) was the thrill of a lifetime! Similarly, if not as well known, The Lincoln Highway (US30) has an allure and charm not dissimilar to 66, but thankfully large stretches of America's first coast-to- coast highway, the Lincoln (established 1913-Atlantic City to the Pacific Ocean) is STILL US30. The Federal Government made our lives easier through construction of the Interstate Highway System, but the price of progress brings about sacrifices, such as the decomissioning of US66, which in hindsight fails to preserve our nation's heritage with all due respect. Live on 66! In our hearts, and minds, you are still THE Mother Road!!! (P.S. persons visiting Greensburg, PA, along the path of the Lincoln, should visit the recently refurbished former Pennsylvania Railroad station (adjacent to the original 1913 Lincoln Highway alignment, for a comprehensive tour of what we could call The Father of all Highways!)

Route 66 is the most famous but actually only one of many historical highways in the United States. I would hope that one benefit of the popularity of US 66 would be increased enjoyment and an interest in preservation of other historical roads. To mention a couple in the US, first there is my favorite: US 40, The National Road, which starting around 1810-1825 connected the East coast with the Mississippi valley. Much of the old road in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia is still used and even some of the old toll facilities and mile markers are preserved. Johns Hopkins University Press recently published a two volume history of this road and its role in pre-Civil War American history. As another example there is US 1 and US 301 (now the horrible I95) which ran from Maine south to Key West and connected New York City and the NorthEast with Florida. This was and still is a popular vacation trip.

Got interested in Rt.66 almost 20 years ago when my cousin was at collage in Lincoln Ill. Took I55 to get there the first time. On the way back there was construction on I55 so he knew the 'back roads' back to Chicago, Most was Rt.66. It was so cool to see the old sometimes long forgotten buildings and kinda wander off in thoughts to what it must of been like up until the 1960's. Untill that time(me being used to travel on the interstates where you can use up a full tank of gas without ever using the brakes) I used to wonder how people got along in cars with steep gear ratios ( you know before overdrives)on the high-ways having to listen to hours on end of the motor at basically the same note. I guess I found that certain something about slowing through small town streets, where peoples homes were, seeing how they lived, toys in the yards, neighbors stopping to talk to one another while doing yard work, that made you forget the impersonal interstates where the sooner you get to your destination with the least amount of times you need to even make a 5 minute gas stop, the better. No wonder people got cell phones stuck to there heads and weave through traffic, they want to be anyplace but the cold interstate. For the past 13 years from our house to my wifes Grandmothers, we've had the choice of taking the interstate which was a 95 mile trip vs the 'back roads' about 70 miles but took an average of 10 minutes more and used more gas, we've been taking the back roads for 12 1/2 years. And you know something, it never 'feels' like an almost two hour trip. Next month we're going to the Galaxie clubs national show in Branson Mo. This will be the first long trip made in my 1967 Galaxie since being "souped up" to over 500 hp with 3.70 gears, no cellphones,no overdrive,no problem, we'll be on 66.

This is a wonderful sight and I enjoyed it all. I was disappointed in it not having The OLD 66 VISITOR CENTER and HACKBERRY GENERAL STORE in Hackberry, AZ as a MUST SEE. It was built in 1931 and has had a wonderful man named Bob Waldmire collecting artifacts and it has donations from others intent on perserving the history and lore of Rt, 66. My husband and I have recently purchased it from Bob. Be sure to stop by '. We will be ther by the first of the year and it is going to be different than all the other great spots you have marked to stop at. Hackberry is 25 miles east of Kingman. Hope to see you soon!

What a great site- still can hear Mick and the boys belting out the place-names as they run through the song- I wonder how we'd go taking the trip down there on a motorcycle (long-distance no problems, rather would I find the roads- and how do you ride on the wrong side of the road). Again, thanks for the memories of my youth brought back by this site I've surfed into. Cheers to all. TonyTAustralia

This page has been a blessing. I moved to NM from near Chicago, IL. I haven't driven much on route 66, but I am enchanted by small towns, 2 lane highways, and just driving itself. I moved here with my best friend. She has been here for a year, and now she must leave. We are planning a trip to the ocean via Route 66, and I was having a lot of trouble trying to figure out a route. This web page will allow us to follow our dream and have one more grand adventure before she must go. Think of us well on our journey via the Mother Road. We will appreciate every second, every piece of the past, and every part of our present. Thank you for having this page, it helps our dreams come true....

On a cross country trip in Feb. 98, I had an opportunity to drive on some small sections of the Mother Road, and instantly fell in love! I was helping a friend move, and had to meet a deadline, but I want to go back aand spend some time exploring. I found some towns that probably haven't changed much over the years. To me the Mother Road is a link to our past, and we should do everything we can to preserve it! I'm 32 years old, but the "hey-day of Route 66" is a time that has always excited me and I would love to get more information.

After geting hopelessly lost I ask some one how to get back on 66. They told me it was no more, that they had disbanded it the week before and removed all the signs and put up new State and county signs. I had a time geting out of that area. I received the video set with Martin Milner on route 66 as a Christmas Gift. Now I really want to take the trip. It's a shame the goverment decided to abandon the old US highways. It seems more prevalent in the west with the ends chopped off of 6,10,16,40,50,60,70 & 80 to name a few. I appreciate the fact so much work is being done to restore route 66 and make it possible to once again drive on it.
