My dream is to do the trip. I am 16 and a Marilyn look alike. I plan on redoing a vintage car of my own and starting the drive the day I graduate, I don't care if I go alone, all I want is to feel the warm air and the roar of the engine, while the only to worry about is the next stretch of road. I can only hope that this dream comes true and that there will still be enough of the road left to make some great memories.

Cool site... Man, I grew up along 66, in Pasadena, CA, and never knew it. Last year, after writing an well received Rock/Travel book "Rock Highway" (in German), I traveled 66 from Santa Monica to Lake Michigan and back; three very cool weeks, with a lot of excellent folks along the route and way too much to see. In May of this year, the new book will be out; Route 66 (mit irgendeinem Untertitel... keine Ahnung; wahrscheinlich+ sowas wie "Rockgeschichten entlang des Highway"), published by Chr.Links, Berlin. Yes, they pay me for driving 66 and having a ball.

I live in one of the many towns that still have a portion of the old girl. Gallup gets its name from the paymaster for the construction gangs who were building the at&sf railroad. i would not enjoy having to drive on a trip on the old highway. can you imagine trying to pass, or being passed by an 18 wheeler on the old winding two lane road?

I travelled Route 66 regularly from 1956-1959. I've driven from Amarillo to San Bernadino in 1956. I accessed Route 66 in Oklahoma while stationed there in the US Air Force Whenever I was to go east or west, I accessed Mother Road. When leaving the Air Force in early 1959, I went along 66 from Oklahoma to Kansas and east! Great memories. Great photographs.

I took two weeks of vacation in May '95 and started on 66 in Sullivan, MO. just me and my 35mm camera. I got some good pictures and met some great people along the way to California. Great page! Travelled the Route two years ago through Arizona. Was zooming along about 6:30 pm when I looked in rear view mirror and saw the most amazing sunset I had ever seen. Slammed on brakes and left car in the middle of the road as I sat on the back bumper and watched. Not another car drove by to interrupt my enjoyment and my photos turned out great. Happy memories to all!

I made the trip 2x with my family on vacations in late 50's.We went NY-CA via CHI.The 2 most impressive memories are...The Wigwam Motel in AZ, and how the road especially in the midwest, just seemed to show what a wide-open beautiful world we lived in.I always feel blessed to have been born in US.To be able to see the wonderful scenery God created for us and to marvel the man-made wonders created by man.Cyrus Avery had no idea what he was getting into when pushed for 66. I drive on 66 everyday and even get to pass by Duane Meyer's service station at Foothill and Etiwanda in Rancho Cucamonga most days.If I had the money,I'd buy it (it is for sale) and turn it into a roadhouse cafe/historical site. This site is EPIC...It never fails to amaze me seeing how many folks recall Mainstreet of America and how younger people have taken to "THE ROAD". I wish everyone taking the trip good luck and...enjoy.

As a very young man, I lived in Afton, Oklahoma, on Route 66. In 1935 to 1940 some of the road to the South of Afton, was still only one-lane. When one met an oncoming car he would have to pull to the side to let the car pass. In Afton, where the Main Street intersected Rt. 66, there was a red light. Can you imagine a red light in the middle of an interstate highway? A group of us hung out, on occasion, at an overpass, South of Afton to watch the various makes of cars of that era pass by. There weren't too many passing by in those days, but we were rewarded by seeing lots of Cords, Packards, Nashes, etc. Those were truly fantastic days and I'll never forget them. I would love to hear from anybody who lived in that area during that time period.

"Got our kicks on Rt.66" last weekend. Gail, the kids and I went on the 10th Annual Rt. 66 Fun Run out of Seligman, Arizona and drove the longest remaining stretch in the USA. My son just got his drivers license and drove our Chevy Blazer with his twin sisters on board. His first road trip was on the "Mother Road" and we all had a blast. Our hats are off the Angel Delgadio and the staff of the Historic Rt. 66 Association of Arizona for their tremendous program. I even got "Martin Milner's" autograph. He attended the entire event and seemed to have a really good time. I know that all of us enjoyed having him there to help share the beautiful weather, the great cars, our travelin' buddies and "the ROAD". If you ever get the chance to join in the festivities, you won't go wrong. Over 700 cars participated this year and we all had a blast!! The "fun run" is ususally held the last weekend in April and you can find out about it by contacting the AZ Historic Rt.66 Association.

I grew up in Amarillo and lived just a few blocks north of route 66, now Amarillo Blvd. I remember traveling with my family to OK City and all the little roadside cafes and gas stations. I liked all the small towns like Shamrock and Elk City. It's a shame to see so much of it gone. I love your site and the information provided to travel the old route. The stories are great. I remember eating at the Club Cafe in Santa Rosa and I'm sad that it's gone now. Thanks for helping me relive some of those fond memories.

First drove original highway 66 in 1941 in my '32 Ford convertible. Have driven it many times since and am sorry to say that not many parts of the original 2 lane road still exist. Most traffic was cars as heavy hauling was done by rail which ran next to highway most of the way. Good trip then - not too practical today. Best stretch left today is in Arizona west of Flagstaff. My bit -Springfield MO/LA. By the way, I am 72.

After living in Arizona for 25 years, I finally did the Seligman to Golden Shores loop. What a great time! The Grand Canyon Caverns is a must see (say hello to "BOB"). I enjoyed the mesas between Truxton & Hackberry, the pre-Oatman switchbacks and the drive from Oatman to Golden Shores (kind of gives you a feel for what driving 66 must have been like 50-60 years ago). We were THRILLED to meet and be waited on by Juan Delgadillo at the Snow Cap (great Dead Chicken sandwich!!). Juan got my Daughter Kate with the "mustard" routine. We WILL do this again!! Maybe next time Kate won't be afraid to feed the burros in Oatman!! Thanks to the great folks who put this page together. It sure helped us enjoy our trip. Who'da thunk the best 66 page on the web is from Belgium!!

I wasn't looking forward to going on my dad's planned Route 66 trip, but it turned out to be great fun. I hope we go again!!! I liked driving on the climbing, twisting, and turning roads that make your stomach drop down to your toes. We went to the Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona. Me and my dad both had a dead chicken sandwich. It was the best dead chicken I've had in a long time. Just let me tell if you visit the Snow Cap just come prepared to bring the owner(Juan Delgadillo) one of your business cards because he decorates the walls of his restarant with them. My dad was devastated he didn't have one of his business cards with him, but oh, well we'll bring Juan one on our next Route 66 trip. We went to the Grand Canyon Caverns. It is very educational. If you go though make sure you get the tour guide their named Brian. He is very hillarious and makes your tour even more exciting. We also went to Oatman, Arizona. They had alot of donkeys roaming around on the streets. All the gift shops there are pretty neat. You can buy a ton of souviniers so you'll never forget your trip. I hope they always keep Route 66, so others can experience the fun. I would like to go to Chicago on Route 66. Iv'e only been to 4 states(California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona) so traveling Route 66 to Illinois would be very thrilling. If my dad and I ever take that trip your web page will help us on our way.

One thing that I don't see mentioned too often about Route 66, cyclists like it. As in Bicylists. When they parallel an Interstate, they are some of the quitest roads (ie less traffic) to bike on. Only when you are near a large town with an Interstate access, does traffic pick up. There is usually only local traffic on Route 66. I'm in St. Louis, two blocks from Gravois (Route 66). Where I don't suggest that Gravois is a lightly used road, once you get out to 6 Flags, 66 is lightly traveled. (good cycling) Also, in Ill, when next to 55, no one is there. Just another view

In late April/early May 1997, we flew to Sacremento, CA (northern CA) to buy a 1965 Corvair. After photos & phonecalls, we were 95% sure we would buy it-WE DID. After finding out the car was in fabulous running condition, we drove south on HWY 99 and then hooked up with ROUTE 66 near Victorville, CA. It was so great to finally drive the old highway in an old car! You should all try it sometime. We then took 66 all the way back to St. Louis, MO. As you can guess, it was about 2,000 miles and the car ran beautifully-through the desert, the mountains - no problems. 33 rolls of films later, through all states but 1 - it is good to be home. My advice is to take at least 2 weeks each way, preferably 3 weeks. This way you are not so rushed. We have travelled old 66 before, but this was more special in the '65 Corsa Corvair convertible! In my opinion, that is the only way to drive Oatman Road is in a convertible. Then in late May, "Good Morning America" stopped in St. Louis on their 66 roadtrip. The producers invited us to be on and requested that we bring the car among other things! So our Corvair got on national TV too-part of our 15 minutes of fame. Happy Trails!

I enjoy this site. Would like to know if anyone reading here can fill me in on a subject going back to about 1947. I traveled this route and I believe (?) near or around Winslow, AZ in 1947 there were several hundred like new B-17 and B-24 bombers parked along the highway. I heard a rumor at that time that the buyer, purchased these bombers from our government and flew them to this sight, and the buyer drained out the avaition gasoline and sold it for more than he paid for the bombers. Wonder if anyone in the area of Winslow or have interest in the highway remembers or can fill me in on these details. When were the bombers finally removed from the sight etc. Just curious. I know when I was a young boy and saw all of these airplanes, I was quite amazed at all of these airplanes in one location along a highway.

Route 66 was the "forefather" road that connected the eastern half of the US to the West Coast. Its deficiencies as a true highway (too slow to get anywhere) probably were a catalyst in General Eisenhower's perception of the need for what became the Interstate highway system.

I loved this site. My family and I cruise on Rt 66 as much as possible, (mostly OK, TX, KS and MO). I enjoyed reading the guest book, almost as much as this site. A couple of recommendations to cruisers...stay overnight at Thunderbird Motel in Joplin (very clean and a classic on 66). Also, stop in at The Golden Rule (dry goods store) in Galena KS. Meet Mrs. Dorothea Senter (85yrs young). She is a delight. Check her out in Route 66 magazine (Spring '97). OKLA has an annual car cruise 1st weekend in June. Hope to see you there!

I just travelled 66 for two months. what an experience. I found a cemetery at Fort Reno, Ok containing the graves of 70 German/Italian POWs hidden in a section of the old cemetery. All appear to have been in the years 44 - 45. Please stop by and visit the site. It is located about a 1/4 mile from route 66 and is bypassed every day by German and Italian route 66 travellers without their knowledge. I have the names ind info of those interned. I travelled parts of Route 66 in June, 1996 with my father-in-law on a trip from Cleveland to Las Vegas. We stayed one night at the Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon, MO. Great bug zapper out by the pool! Stopped at the preserved arch bridge in Kansas and found a lucky dollar next to it. Drove through Oklahoma City to see the devastation. It'll bring tears to your eyes.... Couldn't miss the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. With spray paint in hand, we left our mark, if only for a short time, on the roof of an early 50's Caddy. Spent a night in Tucumcari and then ate lunch the next day at the Route 66 Cafe in Albuquerque. Stopped in Jack Rabbit, AZ to pick up a few souveniers and then caught a late afternoon view of the Grand Canyon before retiring for the night in Williams, AZ. The next morning, after taking the 60 mile loop of old Route 66 through Seligman to Kingman(Boy was it HOT!), we left the Mother Road to head north over the Hoover Dam and into Las Vegas. What a memorable trip!!!

I am planning a major 4(?) month cross country vacation next spring/summer with my 8(will be)year old son. The trip's idea started out as a baseball adventure, to visit other major league ballparks and do some small town minor league barnstorming. Now I'm onto bits and pieces of the Oregon Trail, Naional Parks(duh) and old 66. Well, what's left of it anyway. I spent an hour reading EVERY note everyone else left so far this year. What an inspiration! I now realize I was in Oatman, AZ in 1981 enroute to the GM and Ford proving grounds with my classmates from our local Jr College Auto Majors program, and wasn't even aware of the significance of where we were at the time. Our trip next year will be in a 1962 Chevy 1 ton dually RV. With luck and a few tools we should have quite an adventure! I also have a 1962 Nova conv. and our local Classic Car Parade takes place on 4th St in San Rafael where George Lucas filmed parts of American Graffiti. I dress as the Prom Queen for a day for the parade. What Fun! Maybe I could email some of you who are near Route 66 and stop by for a visit? Or you could email me? Happy Motoring!

Hi! Can anyone tell me where I could get a copy of the Route 66 magazine or how I can contact Paul and Sandi Taylor who publish the magazine? I wrote a number of Route 66-related stories while working at a suburban Chicago newspaper in 1995 and 1996. I was surfing the Internet one day, and was I surprised to find out that I'm allegedly a ''contributing writer'' for the Route 66 magazine in Laughlin, Nevada!!! I'd appreciate finding out how my writing ended up in a magazine as well as seeing the finished product. Thanks!

Route 66 is also a wonderful experience on a bicycle. I just rode the Topock - Ash Fork section through Arizona and it was awesome! Wonderful scenery, great people, history and a sense of adventure that's hard to recreate. I'm looking forward to continue riding other stretches of the route and learning more about the history of the region and about myself. Stop at the small cafes and talk to the folks there. The best times I had on my trip were talking to the people along the way. The travelers of Route 66 are a small community bound by our willingness to get off the beaten track and stop and smell the flowers. Enjoy life! Feed the burros in Oatman. Visit the museum in Kingman. Stroll along the desert floor. Get soaked in a summer shower. Listen to the bark of the prairie dogs and the cries of the hawks. Wave at the trains. See you on the Mother Road!

Near Pasadena and its Foothills OFF Rt.66, Calif.
I am pretty new to Rt 66 Memorabelia/publications, but in a distant way, NOT new to its history. I just recently decided to pick a fun collage' print depicting scenes of the old Rt 66 for my kitchen and its extended area. The entrance to my neighborhood is also JUST OFF OF a boulevard that travels thru my town, that was once part of old Rt.66, and of course still displays the 'historic 66' signs all about. I have lived in this town all of my life for the most part, and have an almost direct tie with 66's history. My Grandparents, who came here in the early-mid 40's from Chicago area, traveled the road with their children, my dad being one of them, and settled here in this very small, and almost undeveloped town that sits up next to the San Gabriel Mtns, apprx. 15 mins. or so from Pasadena, California. They lived in a trailor for a few years on a pc of property they bought, and leased/set-up/owned/operated a thriving little gas station and rest stop right along 66 for about 25 years. I never quite realized itits significance and contribution to such a historic part of America until I was much older, and even then didnt think much about it, until I became intigued by the whole era, idea, and my close ties to its existance at the time I simply WALL PAPERED A ROOM in my home. I was also just beginning to collect old Coca-Cola garb, and the two seemed to compliment each other, and from then on, my theme Im building on is that of 66, Coke, Diner, and of course Gas Station items. Im having an especially fun time getting idea's to keep this room fun, and historic, and just at about the time this was all in its early stages, my father, who now owns the property where my Grandparents ran their station on, was asked by one of the 66 Preservation Society's for a story w/ pictures, describing HIS memories of the old era. It took alot of talking into, since he is somewhat of a private person, but cooperated eventually. He had dug out many old b/w snapshots of the old station in its heyday...with its fruit stands, wide generous turn out road, into the station, umbrella's to shade travellers, pop/soda signs along with the full iced chests that held them, and just a vivid display of how real their part in Rt 66 for so many years was. I have since had duplicates/enlargements made of the site, during the day as well as night illuminated with bright lights, etc..and feel proud that my family was a part of it. My dad and mom, have shared many good, funny stories of encounters that my Grandfather had with many customers..good and bad. And I also have many old local newspaper articles of some of these MORE MAJOR newsworthy events. I was just too young at the time my Grandparents were still alive to hear the stories from they, themselves. I get lost in the thought of those carefree times, and would have loved to been old enough to see the station in its prime. My dad worked the pumps as a little boy, and after he married my mom...SHE still remembers certain things about it all, and I even used to 'play gas station' with the old glass/block/stucco bldg, pumps, and restrooms that still were there, and only just recently had been officially closed, when the old 66 was in the process of becoming obsolete due to the start of the newer interstates. And its skeleton is STILL standing to this day, although very run-down, and blocked by a fence and tall tree's for privacy to the property, since it sits NOW at an lighted intersection where it is VERY busy all day, due to the towns growth. If I could make the descision to let any one of the preservation societies take charge and re-face the old building and add some old replica pumps, I would. They are after my dad to allow that to happen, or have the structure moved, since it is one of the FEW REMAINING pieces of the original old route. I will make sure nothing happens to it, before it gets forgotten. But for now, I continue to have a warm fondness for anything to do with Rt. 66, and look foreward to learning more and sharing with others a great part of our past, AND mine too!! Thanks for listening!! That was Fun!

This site brought tears to my eyes. Im 45 years old now, but I can remember many trips on old 66 with my parents when I was a kid. I can remember riding in the back of a 55 Chevy station wagon with my sister and coloring books. On that trip we got into one of the most severe storms just as we got into Tucumcari. My parents seeing the black sky, used their heads and pulled into a gas station right after the railroad tracks on the east side of town. The storm came up quickly and fierce. My Dad had just enough time to back the rear of the car into the wind and rain, it rocked and rocked, and everything around us flash flooded except the gas station. What luck! Your tour brought back many memories of all the small towns along the way, Clinton,Sayre,Rolla, also the Big welcome to Texas stone nestled in the cotton woods by the side of the highway. Many, many, memories that seem like yesterday, thanks, lets hope 66 stays in good enough shape for us to enjoy.

Ideally, I'd like the class to bicycle the entire Route 66 journey (2400 miles) without ever leaving the classroom. They would cover approximately 25 miles per day on a stationary bicycle until sometime in June, 1998. As we progress westward at 25 miles per day, students would correspond via the Internet and regular mail delivery with towns along the route, looking for anything that local citizens would like to share with the class... background of the towns, stories, or just general news. I would greatly appreciate your input on this idea, including any relevant information that you think I should have before coming to a final decision as to whether or not to peruse such an undertaking. Are there any educational or curriculum guides written exclusively about Route 66? Any and all information would be appreciated. Thank you. Hi everybody, I just came back from a 31 day roadtrip on my Harley. The purpose of the trip was to travell to whole Route 66. So I started 31 August and made it in 3 days to Chicago. Then the real adventure began at Michigan Ave near Grant park. I took my time for Rt 66 in order to see as much as I could and to meet most of the people I read about in Tom Snyder's and Tom Teague's books about the Mother Road. So 22 days after I started me and my trusty Harley arrived at the Santa Monica Pier at the Pacific Ocean. It was kind of sad though, because unlike an usual vacation I wasn't at my destination but with the journey on the old road the vacation was over at the end of Rt 66. After a short stay in LA I rode back home to Wichita Falls in 3 days and was back from my adventure 31 days after I started. It was a dream come true and my vacation of a lifetime so far. I enjoyed riding on the old pavement and even the old, old unpaved parts of 66. I've seen the US from a completely different viewpoint - and I'm sure I saw it the way it was meant to be seen. I met most of the people along the road, I read in the books about, and they all were very friendly and so kind to share their experiences with me. If I would name them here the list would by far be to long. Since I was lucky with the weather (which is kind of important on a motorcycle) I can really say that for me it was the most fantastic trip ever. So if you ever get a chance to travell Rt 66, even if you can only do parts of it, do it - you won't regret it!!! So long - travel safe and have fun on Route 66 Heiner

We traveled on Route 66 coming to live in California in Oct. 1953 and loved the sights along the way. In a trip to Evanston, IL, we caught a portion of it on the way back from some caves we had visited in Missouri. Each time it is a nostalgic time for us. Sincerely, Ruth Lasnik

My wife and I rented a Cadillac Symbolic DeVille this summer and drove it to the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo. Caddys are great for the bad road beanfield 66 stretches in Oklahoma and Texas, hard to feel the bouncing, and the air conditioning won't let you down. But I don´t know if all parts of this route are accessible to bicycles. And I would like to know what is the total kilometrage (or mileage) of Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. This site should give Belgians and other Europeans a good overview of what remains of our Route 66. I travelled parts of Route 66 many times, beginning with a trip from Pennsylvania to California in 1937, when I was 12 years old. I hadn't realized that Route 66 would be of any interest to those from other countries. Here in Oklahoma efforts have been made to preserve some of the sites that would be of interest to many travellers from Europe.
