Kentucky Dept of Education-Office of Education Technology
I found your address through a posting on one of the many listservs to which I subscribe. In Kentucky, every school district (176) is connected to a file server at the Ky Dept. of Education in Frankfort. WE are currently in the process of encouraging all schools to connect to their district offices. This gives them access to e-mail, the Internet and many other advantages. Kentucky is also one of the leaders in the nation in placing technology into the hands of all students. The goal is to have one computer for every 6 students, and one computer for every teacher's classroom. We have trained support people located in 8 regions throughout the state who help the districts plan and implement the Kentucky Education Technology System (KETS) SPECIAL INVITATION! You are invited to attend our Kentucky Education Technology Conference in Louisville, KY on February 29-March 3, 1996. Last year there were approximately 5,000 people in attendance. We will have nationally known speakers as well as teachers, students and administrators who will provide gener general interest sessions at the conference. For more information, please contact me at my e-mail address or phone (502/564-7168).Signed on: Mon Jan 8 20:49:33 MET 1996

In 1964, at the age of 19, I drove from New Jersey to Chicago where I got on Route 66. We drove all the way to L.A. in a 1940 Studebaker. That car made it up to San Francisco on Rt 1. and as far back east as Salt Lake City where I ran out of money for gas. I revisited Rt. 66 last April when I covered the bombing in Oklahoma City. My amateur '60's rock band, The Love Handles, does a very tight version of "Route 66".Signed on: Wednesday January 17, 1996

When travelling R66 E to W out of Oatman, AZ, just after leaving the once thriving mining community of Goldroad, (take out the camera), you will pass a "well-used" trailer camp/gas station of the 20's. This was a 30's - 40's overnight stop for those that couldn't get up the hill to Oatman, or were too late to get a room at the Oatman Hotel. This was ED's CAMP. As late as 1980, there was a b/w photo tacked above the back wall of the 6 stool bar, clearly showing Clark Gable with his arm around Carole Lombard. Ed swore that they spent the night at his camp, the first night out of Los Angeles on their drive to Chicago. ED's CAMP is still owned by members of Ed's family, but is no longer open to the public. The photo may still be there!Signed on: Monday February 19, 1996

I've been a fan of Route 66 since the song, TV show, and trips I made across the US in 1970 and '73, trying to trace parts of the Mother Road. It represents a great era in this country. I especially enjoy some of the interesting architecture that was found along this road. Now that more sections of the original highway are known, my goal is to make the trip again, only slower, and enjoy more of what remnants are left. I was wearing a Route 66 T-shirt recently when a street musician said "don't you know Route 66 doesn't exist anymore?" I just responded "yes it does." This website proves it. So, thanks for the memories. This is a great resource for those of us who remember Route 66 and what it represents.Signed on: Tuesday February 27, 1996

When I left the east coast for my new job in CA, I dediced to drive. My friend and travelling companion convinced me to drive as much of Route 66 as we could. From the gravel stretches where the asphalt is gone, to the hostess at the Bluebird Motel, the Two Bay Cafe our favorite stop, Oatman, AZ, was the best time I've ever had! Now, whenever I go to Santa Monica, I always stop off at the end of Santa Monica Blvd, look at the Pacific and remember my trip 4/1-4/4/96. I enjoy opportunities to drive along the old California US66. Brings back memories of my traveling it in the 50s when it was the only way to go. Some memories aren't all pleasant. I've been watching this page for roughly a year now. Route 66 brings back lots of memories, both good and bad, but mainly good. I grew up a few miles away from 66 so most major trips involved traveling 66 to wherever, like the grandparents' house in Missouri, family vacations to California, and so on. Trips to St. Louis were always across the Chain of Rocks bridge before 270 and many even after until it closed.Signed on: Wednesday April 17, 1996
In the '70s and early '80s, Corvette owners HAD to pilgrimage to Bloomington Gold Corvette Show in Bloomington IL at the fairgrounds right on Route 66. Those days you would see Corvettes for miles headed up Route 66 to THE Corvette event of the year. The relationship between the Corvettes and Route 66 was not lost on the tens of thousands of Corvettes going each year.
I've made several trips along it, even to driving to work on it one year. No big deal you say, except my drive to work was 250 miles one way. I saw a lot of the old road during that time.
I now see here in the guest book that many want to ride motorcycles along Route 66. Done that, been there, and ate the bugs. My last motorcycle trip of the length of 66 was in '91, when I loaded up the bike and headed to California to spend two months on the road. It was a great time and I met a lot of nice people and as for those who want to, my advice is:
GO!!!!
However, I sent Swa an article on riding Route 66 by motorcycle. He is putting it on here as soon as he gets the time and I think unless you are experienced long distance riders, you should read it before going. I don't want to talk you out of riding Route 66, but I want you to enjoy it and not have a miserable time.
Now if you are signing up with some motorcycle tour group, then it will be pretty sanitized and safe, where you have no worries, but to me, Route 66 is an adventure that is best experienced alone or with a few friends, not some tour bus full of 100 other people. Can you imagine 100 people stopping along the road to check out an old gas station sign or watch an eagle swoop and grab a rabbit or snake? 50 people will be standing room only in Roy's at Amboy. I didn't see Wyatt with 75 other riders staring across the desert in "Easy Rider". Todd and Buzz didn't have 30 other Corvettes in the show. It is a solitary thing.
If you plan to ride before Swa gets the article posted here, you can email me and I'll send you a copy. It will point you in the direction of things you will need to know.

Used to Cruise Rt66 on Harley while living in Choctaw OK.There's a cool place near Luther OK where the old hwy turns off to a dead end (bridge out). When I moved from the midwest to California in the early '60's, it was Route 66 from St Louis to Pasadena. In those days, long stretches of the paving had a distinct reddish color as opposed to the mundane grey/black of most highways. The road has been magic to me since my first reading of Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath.Signed on: Friday April 19, 1996

Wonderful site! Keep growing it because I keep coming back!! I grew up traveling Route 66 with my parents, as we went from Ponca City, Oklahoma to Joplin, Missouri several times each year to visit relatives. I took both Greyhound and Continental Trailways buses by myself, from the age of 10 to 15 to visit Grandma Ruth's farm in Neosho, Mo (outside Joplin). I'll never forget the 90 degree hiway turns negotiated by the buses, as 66 followed some of the farm to market roads of the 20's, respecting the farm layouts. I'm probably one of the few people around who knows what a "Sangamo Tachograph" is, and I'd love to hear from anyone else who does know. My wife and I have traveled parts of 66 four different years, now, and we plan more. We intend to motorcycle the whole Route from Chicago to LA. Long Live the Mother Road!! steve jonesSigned on: Sunday April 21, 1996

Will join the H.O.G.tour that begins in June, Milwaukee to Ontario. My wife and I will only be able to hook up from Amarillo to Albuquerque, just a little bit of the Mother Road. I can recall this route as a 10 year old in 1960, traveling in (I think) an Oldsmobile 88. I remember watching the speedometer "ribbon" as it changed from yellow to red as our speed increased. I expect one could amass millions of stories, no doubt more interesting than mine. At least I remember it was fun.Signed on: Wednesday April 24, 1996

I was 13 at the time, but remember traveling the Route in a 1936 Chevy 1-1/2 truck with my seven siblings, the youngest being 1 year old. I have never traveled Route 66, but one of my fondest memories is when the TV show came to Niagara Falls in 1963 to film two episodes. I remember my friends and I hanging out at the hotel and the state park where they were filming hoping to meet "Buzz" and "Linc". I'm happy to say we did get to meet them several times during their stay here. We found them to be very gracious, charming and patient with us. One episode was shown the following season; the other was never shown at that time. I did finally get to see it when re-runs of the show were shown in the late 1980's on cable TV! I often wondered why the show came here, New York not being even close to where Route 66 begins! timesSigned on: Saturday May 11, 1996

I drove from Chicago to Bellflower, Calif, with my friend Johnny Fox. This was in 1940, and I will never forget that trip. On the last leg, we drove from Tucumcari, New Mexico to Bellflower in one steady drive. Foud a truck tire in the middle of the road in the kaibeb forest in Arizona, and brought it all the way home. Sold it in Los Angeles, and got enough to pay for most of the gas coming out. There will never be another road like Route 66, and there will never be times like we had when the road was in operation. In late March 1968 I drove with three girls from Delaware to Los Angeles and back on our college's spring break. Our '59 VW broke down in St. Louis, so we got a drive-away car ('68 Chevy Impala SS) and drove Route 66 from St. Louis to LA. It took four days and was adventure-packed. We had run-ins with the police in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. We stole a Rt. 66 sign in Texas, but the police in Arizona stole it back from us. My favorite line from the drive was from a woman running a snack stand in the Mojave Desert somewhere between Needles and Barstow. When I protested at the price of a corn dog (maybe $1.50), she said, "Whaddya want? This is the desert!" In short, all the glamourous stories I had heard were true. Being lost on the "mother road" in a thuder-storm added even more romance to our brief time together. We have decided to try to make the entire road trip one day. I can't wait for the adventure. In late June, 1942, when I was 13 years old, my Aunt, Uncle & two cousins from Hawaii picked me up in Thorntown, IN and took me to LA on Route 66. We pulled a new house trailer all the way, add to this gas rationing, recapped tires and tremendous heat...thought we would never get there. What memories! The zoos. I poured coke on a rattlesnake (in a pen), remember the pop coolers, the neon lights? Oh yes, we did get off of R66 and go down to White City and tour the Carlsbad Caverns. Then after about six weeks staying with my Grand parents in LA, I got on a Greyhound Bus, with the motor up in front, and came all the way back to Indianapolis by myself. What a treat for a 13 year old from a small town in Indiana. Made the trip again with my parents in October, 1947 with my parents from LA to Indy...Signed on: Sunday June 9, 1996

I've been a long time fan of Route 66. I travel the road whenever possible with friends and my daughters, Brooke and Heather. This year, I've travelled 4,500 miles in three trips to the Mother Road this year. I went to The Fun Run in Arizona, I just came back from a trip through Santa Fe, Albequerque, to Amarillo. I travelled on a Kawasaki Voyager motorcycle with my friends, Dave Merrill and Tom Schrah, Jr. I have a Rock and Blues band called "Nasty Neon & the Route 66 Band". We began playing together 30 years ago in jr high school. Band members are my cousin, Steve Mares on bass and vocals, my uncle Manuel Mares on Keyboards and vocals, and Tony and Debroah Silva on guitar and vocals, respectively. If you want to hire us for your next event, please contact me. We play hundreds of car tunes! We'd love to play anywhere in the world, including Japan and Germany. My license plates on my Corvette are ROUTE66. I collect Route 66 memorabilia. Keep the Mother Road alive! Travel the road and support those who have businesses along the way. I've met many people who have been written about in books and in videos. People like Angel Delgadillo, Lillian Redman, Mike Carrens, Bob Wildmire. Talk to them, get their autographs, get a picture with them. My ultimate dream is to open a Route 66 Diner in Golden, Colorado. I'm the Art Director for NEWS 4 /CBS in Denver. Check out our web site at <kcncnews4.com> We have cameras on the web. Check out the weather in Denver if you're flying in, or just have friends living here. Colorado is a beautiful state.Signed on: Wednesday June 12, 1996

Grew up on Rt. 66 in Edmond and Okla. City. Traveled it by family car in 50's many times. Memories: playing alphabet with road signs, BURMA SHAVE signs, visiting relatives on Navajo reservation near Gallup, my Dad lining us all up by Hwy. signs for a picture of "Entering New Mexico, Arizona, etc." As a teen avoiding the Turner Turnpike toll of $1.25 by driving Old 66 between Tulsa and Okla. City. Don't forget to link the Natl. Cowboy Hall of Fame in Okla City. Great Western art there and at Gilcrease in Tulsa.Signed on: Wednesday June 19, 1996

What I want to ask all Rt. 66 fanatics is: Why did it start in Chicago and go SW, instead of following a more-or-less straight line like the rest do? And Chicago has 20 through it! I've traveled the route since 1951 from Chicago to San Bernardino, CA at least twice a year. Many fond memories of fabulose sunsets and locations. The best memories were of the road signs, Berma shave, Indian trading posts, Whitting Brothers Gas stations, drive ins, Neon lighted Hotels, two headed snakes, baffalo rides, Small town parades and rodeos. And Jack just came back from a trip to NM, where he and Mom drove on the big mother road two weeks ago. Now we are trying to combine our railroad modeling hobby and the Route 66 theme in a train layout in our garage. Our railroad is going to be Union Pacific and anyone with info relating to this theme (Route 66 and Union Pacific Railroad) is welcome to e-mail us at Roger_Hausmann@msn.com. I just had about 60 miles on Route 66, from Chemona to Chicago, a few days ago - but it was great. The only thing I don't understand is, why so less americans know almost nothing about Route 66. For me it was a trip who made me a real fan - I'll come back - for sure.Signed on: Saturday August 24, 1996

Route 66 is not a passing fad and it is more than pure nostalgia, it is a personal part of people's lives and experiences. The magnificence of Route 66 remains in people's hearts and minds. The concrete may crumble, but the spirit will never fade away. I believe a fitting tribute by Congress, would be the passing of legislation to make the remnants of Route 66 a National Monument, or National Historic Site. There are many organizations and individuals, trying to gather support for the preservation of "The Mother Road". Perhaps a yearly classic car rally, open to restored cars which were produced during the years Route 66 was an active US highway, will contribute to this effort. A rally of this scale can have the potential to draw hundreds of restored classic automobiles, thousands of people, and great publicity. Imagine a great Route 66 rally starting in Chicago, winding through each city and town along Route 66, and ending in Los Angeles. It is an idea now, but it could be the beginning of something wonderful.Signed on: Tuesday August 27, 1996

Please stop taking the "historic 66" signs across the state of Missouri. In 1991 the Route 66 Association of Missouri raised $19,000 to post "Historic 66" along the route in 300 locations in the state. Back here in Australia, I've travelled the Number 1 Highway from Melbourne to Adelaide across the Nullabor to Perth, then up to Darwin down to Three Ways, across to Townsville, up to Cairns then down to Melbourne via Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Canberra. Definitely worth doing the trip. There are so many wonderful sights along the way. Might see you on the road sometime. Enjoy!!Signed on: Monday October 21, 1996

Tom Marès Golden, Colorado tom.mares@kcncnews4.com Ari's Today-page I've been a long time fan of Route 66. I travel the road whenever possible with friends and my daughters, Brooke and Heather. This year, I've travelled over 6,000 miles in three trips to the Mother Road this year. I went to The Fun Run in Arizona, I just came back from a trip through Santa Fe, Albequerque, to Amarillo. I travelled on a Kawasaki Voyager motorcycle with my friends, Dave Merrill and Tom Schrah, Jr. I've travelled with my best friend in the world, Laurie Ott in California. I went to the Run to the Heartland with my friend Tom Schrah in October. It was great to meet the serious 66er's I met David Sanger of the group, Asleep at the Wheel, I spent some time with Paul and Sandi Taylor. They are wonderful people! I've lived within three blocks of Route 66 my entire life -- more than 40 years. Early on, we crossed The Road to what is now Route 66 Service Center to grab a 5c soda. A good friend owns the Marathon Station referenced in the tour at this site. My father grew up four houses from The Road; on Sunday afternoons (things were slow in Dwight then, and have speeded up a little in the interim), his family set up lawn chairs at the intersection of The Road and what is now Ill. Route 17, and watched for accidents. As I said, life was slow then. Great site. I'll recommend it to friends.Signed on: Monday November 11, 1996

In the last issue of Route 66 magazine, there is a shot of a car going down an alignment of Route 66 on La Bajada Hill in New Mexico. Great WEB Site. Just rode (Motorcycle) from western AZ to LA last weekend On Route 66. The road was closed from south of Fenner thrue Essex and Chambless. The road was blocked with large ciment blocks and half a dozen "ROAD CLOSED" signs. Had to take a long detour back to I40 then down to Amboy further west. Anybody know if this is just temporary? The roadblock sure didn't look temporary! Also, anybody know if any TV station plays reruns of the Route 66 TV Series?Signed on: Sunday December 8, 1996

This web page is great! Having a love for roadtrips around western New Mexico, I take day trips out west towards Grants, and points east. The church at the top of the hill at the town of Mc Carty's is worth looking at. I On weekdays after an appointment, I often drive home via '66 (Central Avenue) just to see the old motels and imagine what it was like in those seemingly innocent times. I look forward to using this site in the future, as it has good information. By the way - when I was MUCH younger, my family and I lived in Belgium, as my father was in the US Air Force stationed at SHAPE, outside of Mons. I miss the chateaux and the wonderful way the history was preserved, plus nice people. I like New Mexico's sun more than your rain, though!!! was likeSigned on: Friday December 13, 1996

3 and a half years ago, I struck out from Chicago with Snyder's and Rittenhouse's book in hand in a beat up '84 Maroon Subaru. I had every intention of going all the way to Santa Monica but had to abandon the Mother road after Texas and head north to Colorao (my final destination on this road trip) beacuse the poor old subaru just kept overheating. (I would return to the Tx-NM border to finish a few yrs later with a slightly newer silver Soobie) Well, the point of this particular Story is that while in Texas, I decided to forgo Snyder's suggestion to get on the Interstate outside of Alanreed and attempted to follow the dotted line which ran south of I-40 to Rockledge Station, Jericho then on to Groom. Well, yes I had a subaru, but it wasn't a 4-wheel drive. The road started easily enough, gravel, but slowly deteriorated to dirt, to grassy ranch land (I passed several cows) and finally to 4-whl drive type rocky, muddy ups and downs. Needless to say, my soobie and I didn't make it, and as a matter of fact was nearly stuck trying to go up and out off one of those little canyons. It just wasnt meant to be, and after a few moments of real panic (would AAA really come out here to get me) I was able to succesfully back down off the grade I had got stuck on, get turned around, and get back out to I-40. It was quite an adventure, almost felt like I was back in 1940, lost in the middle of America, with no guarantee of getting found. There's plenty to see and do on Good 'ole 66!Signed on: Friday December 13, 1996
