I made a television documentary on Route 66 in 1988, broadcasted in Belgium (BRTN), The Netherlands (NCRV), France (La Cinq), Portugal (RTP) etc. Been there a couple of times and sold my heart. Hello, My wife and I spent some weeks in the US west in Sept. '94. I recognize many village/town names, but, alas, didn't follow the "real" route (mostly took the I-15), and took the wrong direction (went from Chicago to L.A. by ...plane). I hitchhiked parts of 66 in 1971 as I-40 was nearing completion. At the time Glenrio Tex. hadn't been bypassed. It was filled with dust, traffic, and peoples lives headed both east and west. It was a very busy place with all the little gas stations, motel, garage, and the restaurant/bar on the state line doing big business. Each road trip out west now I make a point to pull into Glenrio and take a break. It is an interesting study in how time, space, and place change things. 66 has a lot of stories to tell. Check it out before it is all gone!Signed on: Tue Jul 25 1995

Oh, I forgot to mention... I looked in your listing of books and saw one by Tom Snyder, but didn't see another one, called _Route 66 Pioneering Highway_ "Stories from the road compiled by Tom Snyder" It was a promotional publication (Published by the U.S. Route 66 Association) with funding by Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. When I was a college kid we used to travel from home to school (Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois) Along Route 66. We still travel that route, and it is fun to drive along stretches of the old road. Speaking of the "old road", I have a highway map which shows that Route 66 used to go right through Carlinville rather than follow it "current" route about 15 miles to the east. Portions of this old two-lane Route 66 still exist north of Carlinville. I can help with directions if anyone wants to find this stretch of road. It's concrete, very narrow, with square corners which are nicely banked.Signed on: Wed Aug 2 1995

here, there, and everywhere
I hitched Rt. 66 in '69 from Barstow to Amarillo...stuck for hours in the shade of a hiway sign under a 110-degree sun while the cars whizzed past, the occupants looking at us as if we were some kind of freak show, until at last a nice couple with two kids picked us up and even fed us, since we only had 56 cents between us. A sheriff in Flagstaff thought we were runaways, but we were running back to Texas, my traveling companion to see his dying grandfather and me to get back into school. He gave us a lift through town to help speed us on our way. We later caught a wonderful ride in an 18-wheeler all the way to Amarillo; the driver let us snooze in the back, something I had always wanted to do! The two and a half day trip holds many more memories for me, but I'll always remember the time we spent on Route 66! Long may she live - one of America's premier highways! memoriesSigned on: Sat Aug 5 1995

As a child I watched people, cars, and 18 wheelers travel up and down the main street of Chandler, Okla, 24 hours a day. That all changed in 1953 with the opening of the Turner Turnpike (I-44) in Oklahoma. Today Chandler pulls in (rolls up) the streets by 9:00 P.M.. It is sad to see towns that are no longer growing, but instead, declineing. I travel parts of old Route 66 frequently. Remembering how it was before the Interstates is sad, but People along the Route are still as friendly as they always were. The real America is not lost. It is just hidden away along old Route 66.Signed on: Thu Aug 31 1995

I crossed Route 66 there this Spring when on the way from Death Valley to Joshua Tree National Forest. My friend and I followed 66 to a small town (can't recall the town right now) and then back down to Amboy, stopping in Bagdad to take pictures and record the sound of trains passing by. Travelled most of 66 from Chicago to Amarillo in 1969 to 1972. Most sections of the Interstates were under construction. Each trip got harder and then easier. You had to really stay awake because you would be getting on and off all the time. Construction appeared to cause towns to have to adapt and relocate businesses. The impact was hard on many. As travel became faster and smoother as 66 was replaced, it became less fun and services seemed less accessible and more expensive. You simply lost choices. Does anyone have feedback?Signed on: Wed Oct 4 1995

This is a fantastic site! I've always been fascinated with Route 66, and highway travel before interstates and jet planes. After reading this site, I want to head to the library and the bookstore to start reading books about it. I've travelled small parts of it, in Barstow, CA and around Las Vegas NM. Great reading! This home page is an example of the best possible use of the internet, and it's a pleasure to "browse." I hope to see it grow in scope and circulation, as well as more automotive-related services and information. I stumbled onto "Route 66" via cross-reference (while reading the Nov. '95 Special Car Journal's article on the last Corvette ZR1 production), and I was impressed! The article on Route 66 is unquestionably the DEFINITIVE compact source of information I've read on the subject. Terrific! I can say this home page captures all the sensibility of America's love of cars, freedom, and the wide open spaces. I could visualize all the cultural, historical, and automotive significance of this most special of roads, and what the journey must be like. The people, the classic restaurants and period motels, the nostalgia for what is so great about this land. I hope all possible is being done to preserve the Route in its entirety as an historical landmark. As a tax-payer and contributing member of society, let me know if I can be of help. This is a national treasure, like Grand Canyon, Yellowstone park, and Niagra Falls. It must be protected and preserved. We must not become a country of strip-malls and warehouse stores. Now, I am certain that I WILL drive "Route 66"! Thanks so much for the outstanding article about this wonderful place! cordially yours, Carlo CaraccioliSigned on: Sat Nov 11 1995

The most exciting part of Route 66 lies on the part in Arizona. Go for it! If you don't do it now, you'll regret it, may be not today, may be not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. You owe it to yourself if not visiting the Route at least once in a lifetime.Signed on: Wed Nov 15 1995

This is absolutely GREAT!! Roads bear a special charm for me, since my father has been in trucking since 1951. They were and are magic things that have taken me on great adventures, taken my father from me for periods of time, and brought him safely home again. He has driven roads like 66 for a LONG time, and I hope you will consider maybe doing some pages on some other lesser known roads, like route 40, the nation's first coast to coast highway (parts of which I am intimately familiar with), and maybe you'll learn about the intersection of route 40 and route 42 near Columbus, OH which was one of the original 'Crossroads of America', and for a while in the 50's, the world's busiest freeway interchange. Oh well, enough rambling for one day, keep up the good work!!Signed on: Thu Nov 16 1995

I grew up on Route 66 at four different sites-Holbrook, Flagstaff, Albuquerque and Winslow. My father owned the drug store featured on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. My WWW Domain will be up in mid January, 1996. It will feature true stories of what it was like as a teen ager growing up in Winslow during World War II. "Uncle Ray's photos from the '20's, his adventures on Route 66, the escapades of the Tucker Flat Gang (10 14 year olds) in the region around Winslow will be featured. Insights into what it was really like living on the mother road should be interestintg to everyone fascinated by the highway. It was thrilling and exciting and the times were magnified by the freedom and synergy of World War II.Also featured on "Passages West" will be stories and pictures of the enchanting sites in the American Southwes. It will be a pleasure to share the adventures, freedom and fun of those days.A story relating how my two friends Freddy and John took off out in the desert north of Winslow one Christmas vacation will be on my home page at Laplaza before Christmas. A blizzard hit Winslow and the Navajo County Sheriff took my north toward Tucker Spring to look for my buddies. Heavy wet snow poured down and we had to turn around to avoid getting stuck in the red Turaisic clay.Signed on: Sat Dec 9 1995

Haveing grown up on an island, let me tell you, road trips that last more than an hour and cross into other states are a dream come true. I plan on doing it backwards, just for fun. Thanks for the cool page!Signed on: Fri Dec 15 1995

Hi, everybody! I'm on a world wide quest to unite all the people who share my name or something close to it. So if your name is "Jeth" of "Jethro" please contact me and let's see what happens from there. Maybe we can form this cult whose main purpose in life is to watch as much T.V. and surf the net as possible. I also consider food very important. I will also consider people who always wanted to be named "Jeth" or will in the near future do so. So bye and thanks!Signed on: Sat Dec 16 1995

I work over what used to be route 66. The state capitol in OKC was built on 23rd street. This is a route 66 historical route and has changed drastically since the highway's hayday.Signed on: Tue Dec 19 1995

As I read through the comments about the Coral Court, I couldn't help but write. I used to (and still do) drive by the Coral Courts site. I miss the 50's architecture. It reminded me of when I was a child and how simple everything was. On another sad note, the 66 Drive In Theatre is now a suppermarket, home supplier and electronics store. I'm glad I was able to take my kids there before it's demise.Signed on: Thu Dec 21 1995

Just traveled the route collecting stories of people who lived along old 66 in the 30's and those who traveled it in search of a better life in California...those Dust Bowl Days...looking for anymore stories that could make a CD-ROM on John Steinbeck's the Grapes of Wrath come to life...loved the road...loved the people...it will linger in my mind for years to come...I'd love to hear any stories of the road...Signed on: Tue Dec 26 1995

In 1952 my family travelled parts of Rt 66 while moving from Michigan to San Diego. Twice!! We pulled a one wheeled trailer, stacked 7ft high with our belongings, behind and old Buick. I hope to travel some on the old highways soon on my Goldwing. Check the above Moon home page that has info about an upcoming travel guide of old routes.Signed on: Sat Dec 30 1995

I traveled on Route 66 from Arizona to Chicago on the way to Michigan to visit my husband's family in the early years of our marriage. I have many fond memories of that route, and I wish it could have been preserved as a national historic site. Progress isn't always for the best.Signed on: Sat Dec 30 1995
