Back in the 60's I traveled with my parents on 66 from our home thon of Chicago to LA. What a ride, too long for a kid like me. Later while watching the TV show "Route 66" I swore I make the run again. When I finally bought my Corvette in 1990 I tried. Although most of 66 was now a super highway it brought back memories of that ride in the early 60's. Thanks for listening and keep the site up and running for our kids.Signed on: Friday January 16, 2004

During my younger days in the military, I had the good fortune of traveling Route 66 between the West coast and Ohio. It was sad to see its demise as a major highway, but it is still memoralized as much today as it was back when I traveled it. The old saying is,"all good things come to an end", but Route 66 will never fade away.Signed on: Friday January 16, 2004

I found out that 7th and Broadway in Los Angeles is the original historic end of Route 66 before it was extended to the beach. In the summer of 1971, just before my senior year of high school I took what was to be the last vacation I ever took with my parents. We took 66 (almost exclusively) from Illinois to LA. The first night, we stayed in the famous (or infamous) Coral Court Motel. I loved the art deco glazed brick and glass block structures, and all my life meant to go back and stay again. Unfortunately, the motel closed in 1993 and was torn down in 1995 in favor of a housing subdivision. One of the famous bungalows was disassembled piece-by-piece and preserved by the Coral Court Restoration Society. I understand it is now on display at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation. My other memory of the drive through St. Louis was that as we left the Coral Court and passed by Eureka MO, it happened to be the very first day of business ever for the amusement park Six Flags over MidAmerica. We kids did want to stop and go to the park, but it would have delayed our trip by at least an entire day, so we didn't stop to be part of amusement park history. Except for a side trip to Las Vegas, we followed Route 66 all the way from Springfield IL to LA. We stayed in Oklahoma City the second night, followed by Albuquerque NM, Flagstaff AZ, Boulder City NV, and Anaheim CA, so to answer a previous question in the guestbook, the trip took six days of "stopping-along-the-way-to-do-touristy-things" travel. Now that I'm an old geezer I'm planning to take the motor home down the Mother Road and recreate my 1971 trip (which incidentally was itself a re-creation of my parents 1954 honeymoon). Here's to a third generation of 66 travelers!Signed on: Monday February 9, 2004

I was raised on US 66 from the time I was about 3 to my high school graduation when I 18 1/2 years old on 900 N block of 9th St. in Springfield, IL. Just about 2 miles from Abraham Lincoln's home. It's still a vivid memory in my mind after all these years. I'm now 61 and I still remember the semis coming past every hour of the day -- and night. I didn't think much about it at the time, but few people can say they lived on US 66.Signed on: Monday February 16, 2004

That road is the redemption of America to the world . Anyone who has read Steinbeck's "Grapes of wrath" and Kerouak's "On the road " knows and feels that.Is it true that there are hitch-hiking forbidding laws existing now? If so Uncle Sam's gone completely mad. Please write to share some thougts about it. Wish you well and take your rucksacks - spring is comingSigned on: Sunday March 14, 2004

I live in Granite, one of the last towns Route 66 runs thru before crossing over to Missouri. Here is some updated information. The McKinley Bridge is now closed and will be for a very long time (condemded. The Chain of Rocks Bridge is now a walk and bike bridge. Also in early spring it is a lookout for eagles nesting on the bluffs. It is calming to watch them soar. Luna Cafa is still open and serving happy hour daily.Signed on: Tuesday March 16, 2004

Hi, I've been planning to come back to the States to ride the classic Route 66 trail on a hired bike in 2005. I would love some first-hand advice about hiring of bikes and requirements. I am an experienced big bike rider and would probably be riding with my brother and a few friends. I hear that it's best to ride from Chicago to LA. I would love to get any feedback about this amazing journey. Thankyou, Dave.Signed on: Wednesday March 17, 2004

I've lived at the east end of Route 66 All of my life and was always facinated by the roads history . After my kids grew up my wife and I traveled the road(Between Chicago and Saint Louis) several times and always enjoyed it. Route 66 slows you down and lets you breath. I am always amazed at how many people from other countries I meet on "thee road". Many Americans have grown up seeing America at 65 Miles per hour and passing most of the good things that we have here as a blur. I believe in not only smelling the roses but taking the time to feel the road. I retired this year and my wife and I will soon be smelling the roses and feeling the road. It has alway been a goal of ours to travel the road end to end. Now that we're retired we're going to do that. See you in California!Signed on: Wednesday March 17, 2004

I am having nostalgia pains. My family in 1959 moved west via Route 66, our destination was LA. I remember spending the evening in Chicago with my aunt and uncle before our adventure began. I remember that trip and others, like it was yesterday. My father stopped at nearly every tourist attraction, or so it seemed. I still have 8mm film that documents the trip. Also, in the 40's dad's honeymoon was a trip west on Route 66. This summer my husband and I are taking a three week vacation to revisit Route 66 and I cannot wait.Signed on: Wednesday March 17, 2004

We started near Joliet, Ill on Route 66 & traveled to Needles, California the summer of 2003 over a period of two weeks. The four of us traveled to two different cars (Corvettes). We had the greatest time seeing all of the different places along Rt. 66. I highly recommend (if you haven't traveled Rt. 66) that you research through this site on all of the things to see and where to stop. Since we've returned, my best friend who was the one that traveled with us has died of a sudden heart attack. That makes this trip even more meaningful.Signed on: Wednesday March 31, 2004

Just got back from driving most of the road from Oklahoma City to the Kansas/Missouri line. I have done much more of the highway in the past, most of it in fact from Chicago to near Needles, California. I lead bicycle tours for a living and create detailed "day sheets" for the tours. I still don't think there is a definitive set of maps or directions in print. Many supposedly thorough descriptions leave out many obvious sections of the old concrete two lane - even as it travels beside the newer state and national highways. Some are fenced off or have guardrails blocking access. But other neglected sections are open, at least as deadend out and backs. And it is this sort of intricate travel which provides the most ghostly impressions of the road. The road in ruins is the most evocative of all. Sad that so much of it has turned to weeds and worse, but to see it that way leaves lasting impressions of this country's more humble past AND its seemingly relentless push toward development. Each state has curious sections of concrete two lane and old bridges not to be missed. And do be sure to contact each state to receive that state's official publications regarding the highway. Illinois and Oklahoma have some of the best, but still, the best, most thorough and user-friendly documentation with expert directions is yet to come.Signed on: Wednesday April 28, 2004

FIRST I'M 31 SO I HAVE NEVER BEEN ON ROUTE 66. I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHY THIS ROAD IS SO LOVED BUY SOME PEOPLE. FOR ME ITS JUST A ROAD AND IF IT WAS SO LOVED BUY SO MANY WHY WAS THERE NOT A OUTCRY BUY EVERY AMERICAN ABOUT IT BEING SHUT DOWN? THE WAY I SEE IT ITS STILL THERE. YOU CAN GO DOWN THOSE SLOW ROADS ANYTIME YOU WANT TOO. THE NAME OF THE ROAD HAS CHANGED BUT ITS STILL WHERE IT ALWAYS WAS. ALSO I DONT THINK THIS WAS THE LONGEST ROAD IN AMERICA. WAS THERE NOT ONE THAT WENT FROM FROM THE EAST COAST TO THE WEST COAST? AND IF SO, WHY IS THAT NOT LOVED BUY EVERYONE. OR IS IT CAUSE OF THE SONG AND THE BOOK BUY THE BEAT GUY?Signed on: Friday May 14, 2004

My father died on May 4th. He always loved to travel and made the Route 66 trip many times in his life. His wish was to be cremated. In June we are taking the trip down "The Motherroad" one last time with Dad scattering his ashes to remain forever... He would be pleased. Additionally, his grandsons will make the trip for the first time...making the third generation of Route 66 travelers in our family :) In Memory Of: Henry Carter 2/1/23 - 5/4/04Signed on: Thursday May 27, 2004

Hello; What a wonderful site! I am a TV journalist and scale modeler in Las Vegas, so I find inspiration that feeds my curiosity everywhere. While listening to a recent Brian Setzer cover of the famous "Get your kicks on route 66" I though; what a neat model "diorama" that would make. What I need feedback on is what cars, classic, forigen domestic, old and new epitomize getting "Your kicks on Route 66" I have had thoughts like the 1967 Corvette 427 Roadster; or a sleek 1962 Thunderbird with the top down. Can anyone recommend any other idea's??? Love to hear any and all ideas! Thank you Matt Sherwood Co-founder RedFlag Scale Modelers-Las Vegas www.rfsm.net Also any car shows that would like model car show accompanying them?? All the kicks!Signed on: Friday June 11, 2004

Just wanted to thanks to whoever took the time to do all the Route 66 Description maps. My son and I recently took a trip from Chicago to LA using the maps and other than 3-4 very small mistakes they were awesome. We had a marvelous time and will have great memories for many years to come. I don't think either of us have stopped telling people about our great journey. Most areas were very well marked with Historic Route 66 signs. Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and OK are especially to be commended for their wonderful road markings. Keep up the great work. I look forward to taking this journey again in years to come. Vickie and PatrickSigned on: Monday June 14, 2004

Tips on Using Jack Rittenhouse's "A Guide Book to Route 66" (reprint of 1946 book) in New Mexico and Arizona: Pages 69-91: Most of the Historical Markers listed may be found at Rest Areas on I-40 at about the same location as listed in the book. Page 71 - Tucumcari - Lodging still available at Blue Swallow; possibly at other locations listed. Page 76 - Buford -Name of the town has been changed to Moriarty. Buford Steak House carries on original name of town. Page 89- Gallup - Food and lodging still available at El Rancho Page 94 - Painted Desert Inn has been restored as Museum and Visitor Center. Food and lodging no longer available. Page 97 - Winslow - Food and lodging still available at restored La Posada Page 103 - Grand Canyon National Park - Food and lodging still available at El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge Page 104 - Williams - Food and lodging still available at Fray Marcos In Arizona, there are mile post markers every mile on sections of Historic Route 66. Mile 0 is at Topock at the Colorado River and the numbering proceeds westward from that point. Between Kingman and Topock, subtract Jack Rittenhouse's first mile listing from 58 to correspond with the mile post markers. For example, Goldroad is listed as 29 miles (58-29=29...the site of Gold Road is at mile post 29 on the old road.) Page 109- Sitgreave Pass is actually west of Kingman and not as listed here. Page 110- Jack Rittenhouse's listing for Gold Road Summit is the actual location of Sitgreaves PassSigned on: Wednesday June 16, 2004

I'll never forget as a child growing up in Oklahoma the first time I saw Los Angeles in the summer of 1949. After all these years, some 55 to be exact the memories are still etched in my mind. We were going there for a vacation and to see some stars as well. We traveled on route 66 and arrived in the city at night and I'll never forget the awesome neon lighted signs on the buildings and on Broadway. We stayed at a hotel near where the route ended and the next day we took a streetcar to Hollywood and Vine. Coming out of a building was a guy who looked a lot like Spencer Tracy but we weren't really too sure if it was really him even to this day but it was Vine street in 1949 and I'd like to think so that it was him.Signed on: Sunday June 27, 2004

My wife and I made the trip from Downtown Chicago to Santa Monica in August of 2003. We had the opportunity to see Mr. Juan Delgadillo at his restaurant when we stopped in Seligman. He was a very entertaining gentleman. It was not my first time meeting the man, but it was my wife's first time, and it will be a memory we will never forget. We had a ngreat ride on our Gold Wing, a very hot ride, but met and talked to many people along the route. We Plan on making the trip again soon. The older people that are the foundation of Route 66 are passing on so anyone that is planning on the trip and want to meet these wonderful people better plan on doing it soon.Signed on: Monday June 28, 2004

I rode Route 66 from California to St. Louis, then headed east from there, back in 1971. I was on a Honda 750, bare boned bike. As a young sailor looking home, this road was a miracle to ride. On this road you were never alone, as the spirits of those before you rode along. This wide open road beckoned the free spirit, and invited wandering lonesome traveler to her legacy. To judge the why of the road, is beyond the ordinary when the subject is extraordinary. The love for 66 goes beyond the practical and rides the winds of desire, real or not does not matter, only the feeling matters and that lives beyond the bounds of the practical. To ask why an old road is loved, is to ask why the, First Kiss is loved, why sweet memories are loved, why a smile is happy, and why the American version of a, "Walkabout" is a wonder! Ask not why, ask why you have not. Henry Hill Blluknight@aol.comSigned on: Monday June 28, 2004

Greetings Roadies, My wife and I have just returned from a motorcoach tour of Route 66, run by Trafalgar Tours Inc, Long Island City,NY. It started in Chicago, and followed the original Rte 66 all the way to the Snta Monica CA pier. We visited most of the major cities en route, and many other lesser known towns. The tour was for 14 days, and consisted of forty people from different parts of the US, and a number of people from Australia and Ireland. What a magnificent experience, and it has made a confirmes "Roadie" out of me. What a wonderful country America is, and Route 66 will display many of the wonders to those who travel across her vast distances. To those who are thinking of driving 66, do not wait, get going, this is a trip of a lifetime, and you will meet such nice interesting people on your way. First trip on Route 66 in 1955 - from Albuquerque to Long Beach CA. Made the trip at least 50 times since. The interstate's fine - but the Old Route was better. Another fun visit is the Old Ridge Route here - Before the I-5 was built. Still can drive it today - best in a Jeep. Just found a July 1981 Arizona Highways edition that is all about Route 66. Got me thinking about the "good old days" - Forgot that we didn't have air conditioned cars then. Guess somethings have gotten better. :)Signed on: Sunday July 11, 2004

Have just returned from our first trip along Route 66. Fantastic experience. My wife and I have already agreed we'll be returning in the very near future. Hope to have photos, quicktime movie and some travel notes posted on my new website very soon. Best part: July 4th sidewalk egg-frying in Oatman. Worst part: realizing that the bedside ear-plugs in our ancient Kingman hotel (spitting distance from the Santa Fe tracks) were not just for show!Signed on: Friday July 16, 2004

I'm a retired school teacher from Los Angeles now living in Arizona. Two years ago my husband (also retired) proposed that we drive on old Route 66 back to Los Angeles on our annual visit. Normally we take I-40 to the I-15 to the 10. We packed up our motorhome and set out last June 20 and made it to Los Angeles on June 22. It was truly an adventure as we made our way. However, we took the interstate back all the way in one day.Signed on: Sunday August 1, 2004

We were married in Vermont Aug.1954; our honeymoon was the drive from there to Long Beach, CA., home port for the USS Chief AM315. From Chicago we dropped south to join Route 66 west. Stopped at major geologic sites and some of the special shops which often had fantastic automated music boxes. At times we drove nights, slept days because of heat but wonderful trip to remember as we near our 50th anniversary this month.Signed on: Wednesday August 4, 2004

I'm a native Southern Californian and I'm fully retired. My wife (also from So Cal) and I have spent a good part of my retirement years travelling all over the country but we have never done old Route 66 back to California. We did it this past June and finished at the historic end of Route 66 at 7th & Broadway in Los Angeles. After finding a parking spot we posed together under a Route 66 historical marker on the intersection's corner and another tourist there snapped a picture of us. Then we got back into the RV and drove the Route 66 extension to the S.M. pier. Wish we had started in Illinois then we can claim to have driven the entire route. Maybe next time.Signed on: Tuesday August 17, 2004

When you travel to Las Vegas and on a limited time schedule but want to travel up Route 66. This company has the best tour for a one day trip to Grand canyon via Route 66. It' only $94.00 and worth every penny. The only one that actually goes on Route 66 from Kingman to Williams, Az. Makes stops in Hackberry at the old general store and Ash Fork. A few years ago I took my wife & her mother along to visit the western part of the US. Because they had never been out west before. I took them down alot of the old US Route 66 & I informed them of where & what we were on. They only saw these things from a book or television before. We visited alot of the sites along the way & even rode on a steam train to the Grand Canyon from Williams AZ. We had so much fun that we'll be traveling this route again someday together. I had fun being the tour guide for them as I'd been down this road many of times before. It's neat how alot of the old remnants of gas stations & old right of ways etc. still exist today. & the kindness of so many people along the way was outstanding. We loved the whole route. My wife and I toured the U.S. last year. We rented a motor car and began our journey in Florida. As we made our way to Los Angeles we found the Route 66 sign alongside a highway in Texas and drove it until we got lost. We stopped at an inn and the next morning the manager presented us with a Route 66 road map which we gladly purchased. We found our way with this map and then proceeded to Lake Havasu to see the old London bridge. After some difficulty with dead ends and bumpy roads we ended our journey and arrived in Los Angeles.Signed on: Saturday September 11, 2004

When visiting my daughter in Oklahoma City she never fails to drive to the Rt 66 museum out in Clinton as she knows how fascinated I am about Rt 66. Last time she drove me up to Tulsa to eat at the Metro dinner which is a landmark from ole Rt 66. Before I die I hope I make a motor trip from Chicago all the way to the very coast of Cal. Does anyone have any information as to why the name of the town of Burton ,(or Barton?) New Mexico was changed to Moriarty ? I have heard that there is a chapter of a "Sherlock Holmes" Fan Club which holds a meeting at Moriarty every year. Greetings, I currently own the site of the Red Top Court, at the top of the Northview Hill on Route 66 west of Marshfield, Missouri. I also own the site of the 5 Oaks Court West of Marshfield. Both are no longer standing due to neglect and progress. I am trying to raise funds to buy the Red Rooster (Teds, or Victory Court) Motel just east of here. It is the ONLY horseshoe style native rock motel still intact between Marshfield and Springfield Missouri. I hope to restore it to its original condition, and offer rooms and vintage autos for rent and tours. If you can help, send your donation to: Red Enterprises, 16081 East Route 66, Strafford, Missouri. We can use cash, historic pieces, or autos for the tour shop and museum. I took the route as described in www.historic66.com website and printed it out for each segment and put it in a 3 ring binder. I printed it on my lazer printer with two page images per 8 1/2" by 11" sheet and then put the whole thing in a 3 ring binder. I used this to navigate the entire distance from Chicago to Santa Monica. I started from Chicago on October 14, 2004 and arrived in Santa Monica on October 24. My actual mileage was 2537.7. I took a side trip to the South East corner of Kansas and also drove around in Oklahoma City away from the route. In addition, I visited my brother in Pomona CA which is a few miles south of the route. I cruised the route in my '96 Corvette. It was truly the trip of a lifetime. I didn't have any car touble except I picked up a nail in my right front tire in Arizona and a cracked windshield in McLean IL at the Dixie truck stop.Signed on: Sunday November 14, 2004

What a better way to test a new 40' Monaco motor home, this summer, 17 states that included portions of Route 66. Route 66 has always amazed me with its history. One should realize Route 66 was indeed, the "Mother Road". Without Route 66, many would not have seen the true American countryside in a way it was meant to be seen. Relax ... enjoy the drive! Life is short. Do it now, for tomorrow may never come. "Thom"Signed on: Friday November 26, 2004
