Traveling Route 66 gives one a sample of past and present Americana. I began my journey in the urban landscape of it's Chicago beginning to it's urban landscape end in Los Angeles. In between those two great cities was an adventure into the past with a hint of what life was like more than 70 years ago and it brought home that reality that no text book could have accomplished.

I left Pontiac Mi. in July 1965 with two buddies and we traveled to Pasadena, Ca. via Rt. 66. After 40 years I still have vivid memories and warm feeling of that trip. We stayed at the now defunct Mentor Hotel at the corner of Rt. 66 and Mentor Ave. We returned in August, taking the same route home. What an adventure, what a memory. I shall never forget the experience and the hundreds of sights I saw. I was only 19 years old. Thanks for the memory in pictures that you have provided here.

I whish that their was time to travel Route 66, or most of the route back to the Midwast, but, as time does not permit, I will put it on my agenda for another time, still looking for the best route to route 66 from Southern CA. another time, I'll drive, not sure if on route 66 and where 66 is safe to drive, then detour over I-40 and where ever to Chicago. it is also my understanding to detour around the old route in St Louis into IL due to rough area.

Live now in California
In 1964, five years after immigrating from England, I found myself in Detroit, working for the auto industry. Local dealers paid you to deliver late-model used cars to destinations where they fetched a higher price. Money for old rope! I drove a mammoth Cadillac deVille to Los Angeles, the drive of a lifetime. I followed Route 66 the whole way because 1) it was well mapped, 2) it had a fantastic image, and 3) there really was no other way. I enjoyed every minute. Signs on wierd constructions promised a future, free interstate high way system, and I thought, Oh sure, like going to the moon!

As a kid, travelled a great many miles of the Mother Road with my parents and brothers. I remember the roadside attactions and overnight stays in memorable motels...great food...and endless miles of scenery that fired my imagination! Glorious memories of a glorious time...too bad we can't all get OUR kicks on Route 66. By the way, great website!!!

I drove long stretches of Route 66 in Arizona during vacations in 1999 and again in 2001. I greatly enjoyed the experience and have since learnt much more about the history of the highway and its importance to the American people. I am unlikely to visit the USA again but if I ever do come back then further travelling along Route 66 will be a must do.

I am trying to find a background picture of Route 66 for a power point slide. I preach for the church of Christ. I am doing a series of lessons on the Bible. Since there are 66 books in the Bible I am calling this series, "Route 66, Highway to Heaven." (This is NOT original by me) I need a picture to download that will be large enough that it will not be fuzzy and unclear. If you can help, thanks and if you can't thanks : ) I am beginning my first lesson with facts about Route 66, America's hiway. Sonny Owens

Had a wedding in Phoenix on March 25th, 2005 so we had to see Route 66 since we were going all the way to AZ! We traveled 85% of Route 66 from Pinta Rd (just East of Petrified Forest DO NOT MISS!) to Topock in 2 days! This site was indispensable in helping us to see what is left of the Mother Road in AZ! The feel of the Mother Road is indescribable and a must do for anyone with any interest! We would have missed most of the old road if it were not for this site with its easy to follow instructions! We are planning to do New Mexico next and will be sure to get our directions from this site! Thanks and enjoy!

Hi there, I drove a 9hp Riley car made in 1933 from England to Australia & back in 1960 . I drove from England to Srilanka ,then across Australia & finally from L.A. to Canada along the old "66" .It was the most interesting road of all the trip .It was full of interesting road houses which were full of interesting people ! I left England with £130 cash & worked my way ,hence it took 2 years to do! I stayed at a place called Palm Beach , near Parker (Arizona) while I worked on cars & boats to raise some cash to continue the trip to Canada .I finally worked in Canada to raise the fare home . I still have a few "Pics" of places on "Route 66" . It was a great drive. George

Traveled Rt.66 last summer, just me and my dog. Had a blast, Got emotional, met some great people and learned a lot i didn't know. My advice For EVERYONE travelin' the route: Stop everywhere and talk to anyone around! Every person I met on my journey was more than happy to "sit a spell" and talk. I got great road tips and an eye on the OLD sections, that are not on most maps. Ask questions! Forget about a schedule, just enjoy it.

My husband and I rode the 'mother road' in 2001 with the HOG event. Great time! One year later to the date, June 22, my husband was killed on his motorcycle while riding with 6 guys; a van driver fell asleep and crossed the center line. They were on hwy 30; the same highway we took to get to Chicago the year before on that very date. We had been married 35 years. Three of the bikers were killed, one had brain damage and some other issues and one lost a leg; he has since passed away. Great time on Rte 66; just wish my husband was still here and we'd run that road together again.

June 8 2005, what a nostalgic date for me, because on this date last year I was on a Route 66 autobus tour from ChicagoIl, to Santa Monica CA. What a wonderful trip my companions and I had, the sun, the smells, the dozens of wonderful gift shops and special sites that we visited, and the wonderful people of all shapes ,sizes and persuasions that we met along the way. I spent a small fortune on 66 hats, tee shirts, and many other Mother Road knick knacks. Apart from the thrill of the road travel, one other very important fact loomed on my horizon very quickly, and that is what a truly beautiful and vast land this America is. Route 66 was the trip of a lifetime, but I intend to repeat that journey on the Mother Road again, and soon. Bless you all Roadies.

Hi all! When I was 12 dad took us all the way from Lawrenceburg,Kentucky to Calif via 66. I've been to Europe, the Caribbean, and yet no other trip equaled the trip to CA. We stopped and saw everything and I still cherish the pics. From Deadwood to Death Valley..it was magnificent. If you don't make a trip like this then you haven't lived!! Back then we did it for very little money..today it would cost so much more!! Have to travel RV to see it all today. Anyway, we have some great slides and I still see places featured on the Travel Channel that I can say.."I've been there!" Good luck to any and all who try it out..you will never forget the experience!!

Hi Everyone! Just moved back home from AZ. Had a few opportunites to see Rt. 66, around Kingman, and really fell in love with the whole scene. When it was time to move back home, I decided not to use I-10 but to go out of my way and take I-40 back just to be able to view more of the legend. Best moment was pulling off of I-40, in some part of Texas, and taking the time to smell the roses and enjoy a good cup of coffee at an old time diner. The sign on the door said they have the best coffee on Route 66. I don't know if it was the coffee that was so good or the complete moment that enhanced the flavor. It is certainly a memory that will last a lifetime. Thanks, Route 66, for everything!

Cruisin', which used to be called "draggin main", was down 3 blocks of Main St. and a mile of 66 to the AAA Root Beer stand. Many trips between Okla. and Calif. and loved every mile.

In 1940 I left Donegal, PA on my 18th birthday, headed for Pasadena California. I was going out there to see my high school girlfriend - who had moved there in 1939. Things were tough in those days, money was still hard to come by. Anyhow, I won about $300.00 from a radio contest - and off I went! I decided to hitch-hike all the way (my mother thought I was taking a bus.On July 5th I got a ride with an older lady at Washington, Pennsylvania. She lived in Tucson, Arizona. We stopped in Columbus, Ohio and Alton, Illinois where we picked up route 66. Next stop was Vinita, Oklahoma - then Amarillo,Texas and on thru Tucumcari, New Mexico. There we left route 66 and swung south to Socorro, New Mexico, than to Springerville, Arizona before stopping at Tucson. I then caught several rides up to Phoenix where I got my finaal ride to Pasadena! Some trip !! It only took me 8 full days. There I met my gerlfriend and stayed with her family for about two weeks before shoving off again for home - and a five year stretch in the Army Air Corps. I really had a superb adventure - thanks in a great part to Route 66 !!!! Still hanging in.

traveled double on a bsa motercycle in the summer of 1966, was still intact. kind of went on a dare, my buddy kenny had a brand new bike and said " you want to go to california? I was 19 years old, just out of high school, I say "sure, I'll go, I aint scared" I had no Idea what I was getting into, or how hot it was going to be, and how many wonderful people I would meet, How many sights I would see, Some of which looked just like in the western movies! I stopped by told my folks, who were wonderful christian nazarene parents and gettinup in the years. My mom was 56 and my dad was 71, they were a little suprised, but not shocked after all I was the 6th of eight kids and the 3rd boy of 4, they had seen quite a bit already. My oldest brother harold had already been to was in korea, and my next oldest brother had spent 4 years in the navy during the "finger on the trigger" times of the cuban crisis. Two of my sisters were married with children. They just said be careful. I picked up my toothbrush and a spare shirt and we were off! Over Dorsett road to Lindberg (which at the time was one of the many and varied bypass of 66) and headed south past the brickyard and up deadmans curve. (there had been a lot of serious accidents on that curve and the city fathers and engineers were addressing the problem and how to solve it. Lindberg carried route 66 and a lot of cross country tavelers, this particular stretch was 4 lanes that were wide enough but narrow compared to todays roads, the speed limit was 60 in the daytime and 55 at nite, they had those majic speed limit signs that showed "60" in daylite but had some kind of reflective material that only showed"55" at nite. So you had cars traveling inopposite directions at 60 mph just inches apart. It was fast lane and fun! We traveled out through kirkwood and made a right on 66 and headed west over the meremac river past valley park through pacific and eureka. Here it already started to look thew west with the hills lokking like mountains to me. This part of the highway was the modern 3 lanes. There was one lane in each direction and a center lane that took turns of being a passing lane for eastbound, or a passing lane for west bound depending on how the yellow painted stripes were. It was kind of a good Idea as it was better than 2 lanes, you at least would get an oppertunity to pass slow moving trucks or farm equip. The bad part was sometimes your lane would run out before you got all the way around the traffic. Also along in here you could see off to the north construction on the new interstate being graded. Somtimes it was only a few feet from the highway, other times it was off a ways. I was impressed with the way it was being graded. Instead of following "the lay of the land" with up hills and deep valleys, the new road was almost flat! They were grading off the tops of the hills and filling in the valleyts till the road bed was level. We went trough cuba the sign said "no caastro" and st james wine country and rolla and down from thew highplateau of rolla across the little piney and big piney rivers and into spring field. My bottom was feeling the road, we stopped to eat a burger. I didmnt have much money, I figuresd it would be enough and we would get a job when we got out there. We made it all the way to tulsa on that day and stopped at a motel, there were hudreds of motels, many kind of looked similar with the flashing neon signs that had a seperate "vacancy" part of the sign that would flash seperate, many of them were family operated and fairly small mabey 8 or ten units or cabins they kind of looked like miniture houses all in a row and the smaller sign in the front that said "office" I think we paid the full price of 8 dollars for the room on that first nite. we learned later we could save money by waitin till well after dark when everyone that was going to stop had already stopped and then we would bargin for the room. They would say the price was 6 or 8 and we would say we got 2 bucks and most of the time he or she would say ok, I'll take it, cause your motercycle wont take up toomuch room. We were very tired, went to the room and soon heard a knock, and the lady brought us towells and a pitcher of ice water! man, is this great! Your site is a walk down memory lane. It's been 38 years since I traveled good ole 66 with my parents across country. Thank you for all the work you have done creating the photo gallery. I was able to take a trip, not spend a penny and had the most wonderful time. Thank You

Traveled the "Mother Road" from end to end twice during the early '60s as a Marine Corps dependent. Vividly remember the "Cadillac Garden", the purple stretch of road in the Painted Desert, and the Wigwam Motel near route's end in Rialto, California. Also loved the TV series and ESPECIALLY it's jazzy theme!

Nice site! I'll be on 66 on motorbike early Sept. this year along with a bunch of other Norwegian guys going the reverse way from LA to Chicago, where will meet another bunch of Norwegians taking our bikes back to LA going the "right" direction. We'll for sure have our kicks - and we look pretty much forward to it!! As for me, I've been on parts of 66 twice before, in '92 and '01, both times by car and eastbound from LA. Never been further on 66 than Flagstaff though, as last time we headed north on US 89 right after Flagstaff. Really looking forward to my third time on 66!!

I grew up in St. Louis, two blocks from Chippewa St. whichwas Rt.66! Walked along that street on the way to and from grade school; later caught the Chippewa bus at Chippewa and Alfred to go to high school and later to St. Louis U.(had to transfer to street car, of course.) Even went via the same route to my first job after college at Anheuser Busch yeast plant. I'd love to drive Rt 66 again!
