It's a dinosaur; the blacktop ought to be scraped up and trucked to the LaBrea Tar Pits with the other dinosaurs. If you want to know what it was like, do it the old-fashioned way -- the whole stretch, or at least between L.A. and East St. Louie where it connects to Route 40. And leave your credit cards and ATM cards at home, along with your cell phone and laptop. If you spend too much at one place, you make it up by not eating the next day. And drive an old car, one that increases the chance of a breakdown somewhere along the way, and one without air conditioning. The real Route 66 exists only in Bobby Troupe's song and on the Internet. Thanks for keeping it alive.

On my cross-country move from New York City to California I traveled on Historic Route 66. It was the most exciting and moving experience of my life. Being from a big city you take a lot of things for granted. On this route you'll see what this great world has to offer. I recommend a trip on Route 66 highly! You will never forget it.

The following was from a New York Times Editorial, ca. 1925: "The traveller may may shed tears he drives Lincoln Highway or dream dreams as he speeds over the Jefferson Highway, but how can he get a 'kick' out 46 or 55 or 33 or 21 ?" A near miss to "kicks on Route 66" !

Great site: would love to see even more pictures! Also useful would be more historical background and context. How its chaged over the years... some previously major highway attractions have become nothing but appendages of ghost towns. America is using a tangible source of culture and hisorical sinificance right before its eyes. But even today, talk about a great road trip!

I have spent my entire life repairing cars & now running a repair shop in my home town, everybody always in a hurry. Now it's my turn to experience the drive of my life in a real muscle car that I built. Repeat: "No time limit getting home !!!" I will be stopping to see all I can & even stand in in any Jam sessions I can find. Maybe see Dave lowery , Johnny Hickman, or Todd Park Mohr. Will be much fun!!! cya

Kevin and I traveled the entire Route 66 and more on our "Prenuptual Honeymoon" last year, when we moved from California (San Francisco)back to Sweet Home Chicago. We took our time, for once and made sure we saw most everything along this great road. We arrived at the "End Route 66" sign in Chicago on September 28, 2001 after almost 6600 miles and 4 weeks on the road. It was a fantastic adventure. We got married on October 14, 2001 in Grant Part by the Buckingham Fountain (opposite the End of Route 66). What a great Beginning we though! Our advise: Join the Route 66 Federation and get a set of their special maps. They were really helpful in finding hidden parts of Route 66. It's worth it!

Hey everyone- A friend and I are currently working on putting together a "virtual road trip" for Route 66 as part of an independent study at Johns Hopkins. This summer, we will be traveling along the route, recording what is left of it in pictures, videos, sketches and interviews. As part of our project, we will be trying to interview as many fellow travelers and people that live along the road as possible. But we won't be doing this only on the road; we've already been in contact with some people who grew up along the road or traveled it in the past for phone and e-mail interviews. Did you grow up along the road? Or do you have memories of traveling Route 66 before it was decommissioned? If you'd like to share some of them with us, please drop me an e-mail so we can set up an interview. And if you're planning to travel the road this summer, you may see us out there! -Jeremiah

I just used the photo gallery from your site in my ESL (English as a Second Language) class here in Korea. First i had the class individually find out about Route 66 and come up with their own ideas of its signifigance. Then, the next day I filled in the blanks of the story and explained more about it. They were kind of lost - "so it's just a highway?!" Well, yeah... Then I took them into our computer lab and lead them through your photo journey. It was a real eye opener as they got into, say, Arizona and thought back on Chicago or Missouri! One of my favorite classes I've taught. Just thought I'd share. Welp, time to finish my lunch and go back to work!

I hope to travel the last part of Route 66 this summer in my new 2002 Z-28 T-Top Chevrolet Camaro. I hope to go from my new home of Albuquerque, NM to the Santa Monica pier, then head north up the PCH. In fact I go over the old Route 66, which goes down from Sante Fe through the town of Bernallilo, every day on the way into work. My brother traveled Route 66 back in 1970, or so, when he was in the army. Him and a bunch of army buddies traveled to Albuquerque, to hear my broher explain it, him, a black guy, a Mexican, and some Japanese guy all piled into a car from Fort Sill and headed west. Route 66 truly is a piece of American history which must be preserved. Can America get that swagger during the times of the glory days of '66'? Yea, I think so. We will have new glory days which people will be writing about. With some very exciting automobiles coming out of Detroit and GM; the SSR, the Pontiac Solstice, the Cadillac CTS, the '03 Ford T-Bird, the Ford '49, hopefully this trend in Detroit will continue of putting a contemporary spin on some timeless lines, we may be witnessing a re-birth of the 'Mother Road', Detroit, and everything which makes America the Greatest Nation ever to grace the face of the earth. Go Bless America !

This is my personal story with the wonderful highway of dreams: After moving from our city to Laughlin, NV my now deceased "foster mother" and her son Andrew Dodson beckoned me to come visit them. I had a 1978 VW Rabbit Diesel which pretty much died in 1994 due to my ignorance, yet it provided me the opportunity to discover the California leg of the journey. I covered as much as the route due to time constraints.

Oatman's GREAT (I was knocked over by a baby donkey there!)'The Snowcap' at Seligman, wonderful place but don't go if you've had a sense of humour by-pass. I'm a retired truck driver, with a 55 year love affair with the Mother Road, and even some of the Interstate highways which have replaced most of it.My oldest memories are of my Mom and Dad packing all us kids into an OLD's sedan from our home in south St.Louis, and driving west on ROUTE 66, to Meramec Caverns, Devil's Elbow, Lake Taneycomo, and beyond. It took me until the age of 40 before I could honestly say that i had driven the complete route (Chicago-Santa Monica). The ROAD is still a mystery to me, perhaps because so much of it constantly changes, yet so much remains the same.Maybe the ROAD itself is the destination, rather than some point along it. Kind of like poetry. I would like to warn any travellers who are not familiar with the route, do your research, plan in advance, and prepare for the worst weather you've ever experienced. It most likely wont occur, but if it does, it will be on ROUTE 66!!!!!

WOW!! My husband & I just got back from our Rte 66 adventure. We traveled w/ my sister & brother in law. We had our brand new TBird & Corvette shipped from Calif to Chicago. Our license plates read RT66 4US and 2RTE66. Flew back to Chicago & started our journey on May 13th. We were on the road for 2 weeks arriving in Santa Monica on May 27th. We had the convertible tops down most of the time. What fun!! Lots of small towns, antique stores, museums etc....Wonderful sites & friendly people along the way! Advice to anybody who is planning a trip...2 weeks is not long enough...there is too much to do & see...Definitely view some videos before you go so you know the places to stop. It was fabulous!!!

After seeing a recent PBS documentary on Route 66, I started doing research on the itnernet and planning a trip. The city by city driving directions on this site are an excellent tool. I also purchased Michael Wallis' book, as well as Jack Rittenhouse's "A Guide Book to Highway 66." I think I will take a friend, and drive to Chicago, and then drive 66 through Illinois, ending up in Springfield to attend the Mother Road Festival in September. Should be a lot of fun. Very nice site here, excellent work!

We are back home again after completing a two week trip to California. We stopped off at Winslow and had dinner at the Turquoise Room at La Posada (Excellent Prime Rib !). Visited the Bowlin's Flying C Ranch and had lunch and visited gift shop at Cline's Corners and also stopped by Yellow Horse and Jack Rabbit Trading Posts. Traveled the old road over Sitgreaves Pass and through Oatman (videos of the burros on Main Street !) Railroad Station at Kingman is undergoing renovation as is the Casa del Desierto at Barstow. Needles is trying to raise money for the restoration of El Garces. I am not all that much a fanatic on the road itself, but rather the places along the road, so things are looking up! Also had an unexpected and surprise, but short and pleasant visit with Jeremiah Crim -who is doing a research on Route 66 - while having lunch at Del's at Tucumcari (very delicious Reuben Sandwich !) May do some more exploring after Labor Day. Best regards to all.

Just traveled the entire length of the Route from Chicago to Santa Monica, taking my 82 year old father on a nostalgia trip from his first trip west in 1941! I used McClanahan and Ross maps the entire way. What a great helper these maps were. I would have never made it without them! I highly recommend them. I got lost a few times, but got back on track with the maps. Was also able to drive as much of the "old" road (1926-1931) alignment as still exists! Would love to hear from others who have made the same trip.

We finally did it! Our life long dream. My wife and I drove on route 66 all the way from Los Angeles to Illinois. We rented a car for the trip and returned to Los Angeles via plane. What we saw was a lot of americana history. We never got tired of the ever changing scenery. We plan to do it again in about 5 years but in reverse next time. Everyone should get their kicks on route 66 at least once in their lifetime.

We drove from the Frisco Bay Area to Los Angeles to take a trip to the Calico ghost town near Barstow. We had planned to take I-15 to Calico but decided to try old Route 66 instead although it would take longer. It was interesting to see the historic significance of Route 66 by being there instead of looking at pictures and reading about it.

Before there were the interstate highways there were the routes that people used to travel across America. Route 66 will forever live as the American icon of the past that's very much alive today in songs and films. To some Route 66 is an enigma and to others it is a grand relic of the past.

This is one great way to get one's kicks on Route 66 . A couple years ago I actually did so on the short stretch in Galena, KS when I went trucking with a driver buddy of mine. What a thrill it was to actually experience the magic of the Mother Road, if only for a few short stretches.

Would love any "kid friendly" suggestions--especially lodging. A couple cool historic roads in Michigan: Red Arrow highway along Lake Michigan then heading east along I-94; US 12, an east-west road spanning the southern part of state!!

Here are a few suggestions for starters (I don't claim to be an expert such as Tom Snyder, et.al. but have been traveling "Route 66" since 1961-at least from Amarillo to Victorville) and "have been there-done that"..: For lodging, don't miss the Wig Wam Tourist Courts at Holbrook, Arizona (on old Historic Route 66 from I-40 exits 285, 286 or 289). The "grown ups" in the family will love La Posada in Winslow, Arizona.(Historic Route 66 from I-40 exits 252, 253 or 255) Be sure to have dinner (Prime Rib is excellent !) in the Turquoise Room at La Posada and then step outside and watch the trains go by.The TraveLodge at Kingman, Arizona (I-40 exit 53) is a real bargain (at least it was on our trip last May). Just to name a few. You can probably find websites for all of these. El Rancho at Gallup, New Mexico is also a historic place for lodging (I-40 exit 20, 22 or 26).One of the best coffee shops for a light meal and also one of the best "Route 66" gift shops for memorabilia is at Little America in Flagstaff, Arizona (I-40 exit 198). For the kids, don't miss the "Indian Trading Posts" , especialy Bowlin's "Running Indian" at Mile 234 on I-40 in New Mexico (don't remember which town, if any, is closest) and the Yellow Horse Trading Post at Lupton, Arizona - at Mile 359 on I-40 at the New Mexico-Arizona state line....run by Chief Juan Yellow Horse and his wife. Then there's the Jack Rabbit, just east of Winslow, Arizona (I-40 Exit 269)........."Here It Is !". Nearly forgot to mention Cline's Corners, New Mexico (I-40 exit 218) but it's on the "must see" list, too ! Most of all for entertainment, don't miss Delgadillo's Snow Cap at Seligman, Arizona (on "Historic Route 66" in the middle of town betwen exits 121 and 123 on I-40). The snow cones are "just like they used to make them" and the Delgadillo Brothers - Juan and Angel - are always cutting up and playing tricks on the unsuspecting tourists. And finally, I would recommend at least travelling the old section of Route 66 between Kingman and Topock, Arizona over the mountains and through the town of Oatman, Arizona, with the wild burros roaming the main street. You exit I-40 at Mile 44 just south of Kingman and re-enter I-40 just before crossing the Colorado River into California. It's not for the timid driver or acrophobe, but really not all that bad if you go slow on the switchbacks and the up and down grades, allow plenty of time and enjoy the views. These are just a few for starters. I hope you will get more replies.

Being 48 years old you'd think I'd have known Route 66 was still there. Well I know now and drive the section between Marshfield and Springfield a couple of times a week. The wife and I plan to drive all the Missouri parts of The Mother Road and hopefully the rest of the country in our lifetime. My favorite section of Route 66 is North of St. Robert, MO where the road is divided. Though it's not the original placement it is still like driving into a timewarp. Happy driving to all

We traveled Route 66 this summer for a month and fell in love with the mother road! We used the information on this web site to get us started and found it so helpful. We did use the directions given on this web site and I will tell you they are great! We only got lost a few times and when we did get lost it was in the major cities! I highly would suggest following all the gravel and dirt roads you get a chance to see some beautiful country! We did months worth of research and this is really the best 66 site a round. Keep on following the mother road!

I was very lucky to travel Route 66 back in 1967--the whole route all the way to California. Saw many wonderful and interesting things along the way. If anyone gets any kind of remote chance to travel this road---DO SO! And please stop at the many interesting cities, sights along the way. You will never regret doing so. It's hard to believe that so much of this famed road is no longer "with us". America, thru the years, has become too "fast" of a country and always in a hurry. So, take time to slow down and enjoy our great country on Route 66!!
