What a wonderful site... your trip took me back to the trip my wife and I took in 1992 -- our first (and permanent) journey west of the Mississippi. I believe that we were among the last to stay at the Coral Court, so it was espcially poignant to see that wonderful complex, but how can one see it and not want to editorialize ---- our friends from Europe were shocked when they learned it was taken from the enjoyment of millions in order to profit a few. How ignorant they felt we are for allowing our most significant Route 66 architecture to be torn down because of a nineteenth century interpretation of "property owners' rights", to be replaced by totally forgettable contractor-designed tract housing. Let's all keep on making every decision in this country based on money (or gun ownership) so that more of our architecture can be destoyed, more of our environment can be ruined, more of us can die of cancer, and our children can be killed needlessly. From our recent "selection" of U.S. President, it is good to see that we continue to dumb-down the masses.....(St. Louis, your dumbing-down had obviously taken place well-before the demolition of that wonderful site).

I enjoyed the Route 66 site very much. I traveled the Ole 66 as a child in the years 1947 to 1962, and remember most the hard, twisting and turning road in the Needle and Barstow areas. My father once paid a $1.00 for a gallon of water for the old 1937 Ford, which had boiled dry pulling up some of the 66 grades. We drove it from Amboy to Oklahoma City several times. We went from Washington State on 99 to Bakersfield, the 466 (gone now) and then 66 to OK City, then on US 64 to Sallisaw, Oklahoma, our destination. Those were the days, when it took four days and nights to make the trip from WA to OK. Great memories.

Very interesting and lots of info. Planning a journey to your great country next year, for the Sturgis thing. After this it's really is itching.... first Sturgis then The Route? I know there is a lot gone because some people have no real interest in 'old things' (start diggin'in the ground here and you'll meet the Romans) but it looks to be a trip worth while. I better start saving seriously!

Several years ago I "stumbled" across this site. I'd never given any thought to what became of Route 66, but after reading the page, my husband and I began to dream of making the trip. One condition: before we could go, we must turn in the minivan for a convertible. Shortly after, we started our engineering and machine design business (see our web page above) which set us back a bit; we could not spare the money or the time. Now, after two years in business, we can finally make the trip! We now own a Chrysler Sebring convertible and will hit the road this May. After a long, cold winter we can hardly wait. California, here we come!

I am very late in responding, as I did my trip in January of 2000. I left Chicago, and did the "superslab" run across Illinois and Missouri, but did as much local as I could find all the rest of the way to the Grand Canyon. This wasn't a strict Rt. 66 trip, as I went to the Gypsum Dunes in New Mexico, the Painted Desert and Grand Canyon, too. I even ran up to Monument Valley (for the eclipse!) and Bridges National Park in Utah. I came back down through Colorado just for fun and did my best to reverse the trip on the fly. Your site was an amazing source of information, the (westbound) directions were flawless. When things got screwy, I realized I misunderstood your instructions (I do that some times) and was able to backtrack and figure it out. The experience was transformative, seeing the country "grow up" on the road. I did find big chunks of unpaved, dusty roads for my trusty Acclaim to fly along on. I also found stuff that must have been the dreaded Jericho gap at one time, but is a washed out gully that would eat even a 4x4 for a light afternoon snack! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Oh, and Thank you! Julia

So my mom found this website and found out a whole bunch of stuff on Route 66 and this website popped up. So we decided to take a gander. I think it's interesting that in the photo gallery there are alot of pictures from Oklahoma's route 66. I wonder if the TV's lying. Please tell me. But hurry and write me back and tell me soon. My state reports is due on April 10th!! It's 11:10pm and I'm just finishing up my report, here comes my mom, I have to go to bed! Good night!! write back with the answer ok?? bye!! eliza

I put a lot of miles on Route 66 in the 60's and 70's, and left a lot of money in the truck stops from Illinois to California. Traffic wasn't so much of a factor back then. In fact when driving at night through New Mexico and Arizona, it was like the highway was built just for me. An occasional car or truck, and then 66 was all mine again. Full moon nights where great. Thanks for the memories, Fred Probst, Road Romantic.

A Veteran of Route 66.We drove it in 1967,"THE BALONEY" BOYS" The trio of ; Fat Eds(owner of the 59 Ford Fairlane rust bucket we took from Cleveland,Ohio to Los Angeles. We picked up the 66 in Springfield,Illinois opting to go to Columbus,Ohio across to Terra Haute,Indiana and over to Springfield. And incredible adventure. Many memories;one that really sticks is hearing "Wolfman Jack" for the first time on "XERB" from Tiajuana 50,000 WATTS.(man,I thought KYW-Cleveland went along way.) we first heard "Wolfie" outside of Albuquerque,New Mexico;right around the time Fat Eds finished his case of Stroh's beer, that he layed by the side of old 66 along with "FED" the turtle we picked up trying to beat traffic across the road way back in Missouri. THE BALONEY BOYS seemed to be the last ones on the road, before the concrete stretches were being put down for I-40. WE WERE THERE. The three were FAT EDS; THE CRUTCH; and THE FLASH.

Traveled to Sedona AZ for the weekend. Left early morning Saturday June 2nd. Returned yesterday, June 3rd. Traveled old 66 from Ashfork to Kingman. I hadn't done that since I-40 was completed between Seligman and Kingman. Lack of billboard was shocking. The road now sprts a 65MPH speed limit in most areas. It does get down to 35 through spots in the Halaupai Indian Reservation. The road is in great shape all the way. A few small curio shops and the Grand Canyon Caverans...that is about it. Nice to travel Route 66 when you cannot see the Interstate!!! Kingman has a new attraction near the "Y" split at the old train station. Nice "66" curio shop, railrad modeling store, and 50's diner. It is on the eastbound side of Andy Devine Blvd. Next trip...on to Oatman, ag's thirdain!

Just finished an East - West run to California. I grew up "commuting" from L.A. to Massachusetts and back in the 60's and 70's. I haden't been on I40 until this trip, but I made it a point to slip off the "Big Pretender" and spend a little time on 66 when I could. What memories. Does anyone remember the little cafe outside of Albequerque in the mountains where the wild animals used to come up to the fence by the road to be fed? I saw my first coyote there. On the way to Los Angeles from Vegas last Memorial Day weekend, our bus broke down on busy I-15 just inside Barstow. It was a faulty alternator and after getting the batteries recharged the bus driver decided to use Route 66 instead of the congested I-15 with people heading back to Los Angeles after a weekend of gambling. What a treat to be on Route 66. It was like going back in time to a simpler way of life. I had no idea people still lived along Route 66. Their residences were pockets of trees enclosed with fences. Some homes were a few miles from the highway. Must be quiet all the time.

Fellow Route 66'rs, We just made the trip from beginning to end and it was a dream come true. There are those who would have us believe that the old road is dead and gone but this couldn't be further from the truth. The directions from this site were excellent and, when used in conjunction with the Historic Route 66 signs, make the trip as easy as it could possibly be. There is one important exception!!! AT THE INTERSECTION OF MISSOURI 266 AND MISSOURI 96 JUST WEST OF SPRINGFIELD, DO WHAT THIS SITES INSTRUCTIONS SAY!!! There's a Historic Route 66 sign across the highway at this intersection, DO NOT CROSS THE HIGHWAY AND KEEP GOING, YOU'LL END UP ALMOST TO ARKANSAS WITH NO WAY BACK BUT FROM WHERE YOU CAME. These instructions say to turn right (West), do this or you'll miss Joplin, MO and Kansas! Get out there and support the folks along the way that still make Route 66 great. Thanks to this web site for making a great trip. Sincerely, Douglas Cowles

I'll have to admit I'm not all that much of a Route 66 fanatic. I really like to visit historic sites, and parts of Route 66 fall into that category. Frankly, I prefer to get from one point to another via the Interstate and the latest restaurants and motels, but here are two additional suggestions.: Stay (at least overnigt) at La Posada at Winslow. I notice it hasn't got much (if any) notice on the PBS series on Route 66. Take a round trip on the AMTRAK from either Winslow or Gallup to Albuquerque and return. I wonder if any figures have been made as to the numbers traveling on the route by train vs. highway in the 1930's and 1940's along Route 66. I think both are intertwined, interelated or otherwise connected.

Enjoy this page, but I think maybe we've gotten too obsessed with "Route 66". So many other routes to explore. For example, try U.S. 60, especially from Clovis, New Mexico to Mountainair, New Mexico. Or U.S. 40, or any other. Route 66 just got more publicity.I think "Route 66" was just a victim of obsolescence, just as its predecessor , The National Old Trails

It has been my pleasure to have made several trips on RT.66 the first being family vacations once to the Grand Canyon, and the second to the Left Coast. In 1995 my wife and I drove a considerable amount of 66 through OK, TX, NM, and AZ along various sections. Some sections were impassible and only a few feet in lenght in some areas. It would be nice to be able to drive the entire length without interuption even if it meant creating the roads to conect the existing parts. I know this would be a monumental undertaking but "Wouldn't it Be Nice".

Hello, I love this site!!! My husband, I, and kids made a trip to California in June 2001. On our trip home we decided to visit the Grand Canyons in Arizona. On this trip we visited a strip of Route 66 in Seligman. This is when I realized that the Route 66 did exsist. Then we stayed overnight along Route 66 in Williams. Since then I've been into Route 66 and wanted to learn more. I'm 37, and I've traveled alot when I was a kid and still didn't know about Route 66. Thought all this time, that the Route 66 clothes was just a name for clothes. My husband laughed at me and said, "I tried telling you Route 66 is a real route". Thank you so much for this site. Now I know what site to visit again for directions and info, when we get ready to travel Route 66, and hopefully that will be soon. Can't wait. And oh yeah the radio stations we listened to was exciting. First time in awhile we heard some good country oldies. We don't have any radio stations here in Alabama that plays all those oldies. Gotta go, See ya again soon.

Your map information concerning the location of route 66 as it passed through Joplin, MO is not correct. The original location is not as your map displays. The highway had many turns as it passed through Joplin. Highway signs mark the correct route as it passes through the area, today.

Halo, My name is Kuba Gorski. I come from Poland and I'm 25 years old. Since about two years I have been interested in everything which is somehow connected with American way of life - of course It doesn't mean that America, in particular U.S. is the only thing I'm interested in. In the next year 2002 I would like to travel along The Road 66 by bike. That's why I would like to ask You to send me free materials which could help me organise my trip optimally.

Ludlow is an abandoned railroad town in the middle of Mojave Desert in California. Currently, intersate freeway 40 passes Ludow and offers tourists services like gas and food. There is one Route 66-era motel in Ludlow, Ludow Motel, still running with ajacent coffee shop. You may be interested in Denali Pictures' California Desert Highway video, which covers Ludlow in detail, although it is not free.

I enjoy reading the entries on this site. I have a question : Interested in information on what were the first Post-World War II motels along Route 66. Jack Rittenhouse's book (which I would recommend to any person not having a copy) mentions most of the Fred Harvey hotels still in business in 1946. According to the best of my recollections, the motel building boom was at least going strong around 1956. Interesting to note that Del's Restaurant in Tucumcari and Joseph's in Santa Rosa both advertise since 1956. Any one out there with enlightenment ? Best Regards, Happy Trails, and 73's to all you hams !

As a Corvette fan, it's something that I would have to do in a car like this. I'm also a member of the Camaro Custom Club and over in the States I'm a member of the National Limousine Association because I'm into the Limo business and have lots of runs in our Belgian Intl Airport for American people visiting Belgium. Route 66 is Main Street in my old home town -- GALENA, KANSAS. We lived beside a highway where the nation's traffic roared. We lived through the Great Depression, where "The Grapes of Wrath" was stored. The miners came to practice their craft. They got the lead out, and we got the shaft.

Just thought I would add a few more notes for any comment or criticism.: May favorites (from experience from traveling dating back to 1960) 1. Best times to travel: May 14-30 or September 7-21 (just before Memorial Day or just after Labor Day). 2.Best place for lodging: La Posada, Winslow, Arizona. 3.Best places for dining; El Tovar Dining Room at Grand Canyon; Del's at Tucumcari; Four B's at Grants. 4.Scenic viewing: View from parking area at Mile 113 on I-40 looking towards old Route 66 at Laguna, New Mexico. 5. Of historic interest" AMTRAK station at Winslow, Arizona (include train watching- this only a block south of the Historic 66 route) Remains of El Garces at Needles, California. 6.Best trading post: Yellow Horse Trading Post at Lupton, Arizona (Mile 359 exit from I-40). Realize this will probably stir up some controversy, but it might be interesting to get other's lists, so I post this without any apologies. Happy Trails, and get your get your kicks. I close with a quote I saw recently in a book on the Lincoln Highway. "The motorist may dream dreams as he travels along the Lincoln Highway........but how do you get a 'kick' out of a 33, 55 or......?" . This was published in 1926, when the numbered system of highways, including 66 was just coming into use. They must not have heard of Bobby Troupe at the time !

I can't find it now, but there was a message inquiring about other "Route 66's". Here's One !: Texas State Highway 66 (an interesting route in its own right through small towns, prairies, farms and "Piney Woods") runs from Dallas to Texarkana. It was formerly U.S.-67 but has been down-graded to a state highway since I-30 was completed. Before U.S.-67, I am sure it was one of those trails -THE Route 66 (which some consider to be the only "Route 66" )- has parts of which were once "National Old Trails Highway" - Museum in Winslow, Arizona of that name worth a visit.(Just a block or so from the "standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona !")

I have a copy of a reprint of the 1913 "Arizona Good Roads" handbook which has an ad for Babbitt Brothers Garage in Flagstaff....still going strong in 2001 as the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealer....the garage pictured in the 1913 book was still part of their service department on a visit in 1999.

Have traveled parts of Route 66 several times. Oh-what memoires it brings back. I feel that it is a shame that our country has let such a National Historical Road fall into such dispair. It nearly makes me cry when I see portions of the old road disapear or left to decay. Our country spends alot of money so stupidly - why not do something worthwhile for once - restore a legend...Route 66!! "THE MOTHER ROAD" of us all. This site is a beautiful legacy to a remarkable slice of American History that is being left behind. Thank you so much. I have really enjoyed this site as it is so very informative for the person who would like to travel as much of the old road as possible. Please continue to keep up the good work. My husband and I took our first trip on Route 66 last May. It was the trip of a lifetime for us! We reached Chicago from Appleton, Wisconsin about 10 a.m. and began a nine-day journey to Los Angeles. Although we have both lived in the U.S. all of our lives, neither of us have ever been in the West, so the deserts of New Mexico, Arizona and California were like another world to us. Nine days was certainly not enough time to see everything we wanted to see. We will definitely be taking the trip again as soon as we can. The printed-out maps from this site were our guide and formed the basis of a trip diary and scrap book we proudly show to friends.

Nice to see this "historical" site but I believe it was about 1992-93 that the "Route" was renumbered (all East/West routes in USA are EVEN numbers - for those who want to know the general direction they are travelling)with Route 40 While I have not travelled the Route 40 I would not think there would be any signs now saying "Route 66" - if there were I am sure most have been taken down by history buffs. I have drove the mother road form start to finish in my 1966 caprice wagon 427, five years ago. And have taken one of my girls half way in my 65 vette . This is a ture delight do with your kids. Wish everybody could do this just once in their life. Drive it as much as you can the road and people are neat. Jeff

To all a Happy New Year 2002 - and to Francois Frantzen of Belgium ( who owns this Route 66 site) a wonderful New Year. Francois, you must have spent some time driving Route 66 or you are history buff. No Route 66 in Belgium - the roads & counrty too small!! Well you have some interesting roads in Belgium and a few old WW1 battle sites that are interesting. Cheers for now T.T.F.N from Canada
