It's about two young men who take a hitchhiking trip from Oklahoma City to Huntington Beach, Ca and back in the Spring of 1967.....right before Route 66 started it's full scale transfer to the Interstate System. You will LOVE this book (5-star Reader Reviews at Amazon.com)!! It sold out the first pressing in two weeks. Whilst talking over dinner one night we both hit on something we always wanted to do..'the drive', Route 66 east to west. We agreed we needed to do this and shook on it. We don't plan to make our trip til 2001 but we can't wait. We want to hire a classic car and if anyone has got any suggestions of good deals we would be real grateful? If anyone is like minded maybe we can even meet up. Take it easy. Dave

Plan to, once again, hop into the convertible this summer--put the top down, the radio up and drive the Mother road until we hit the big blue Pacific!!! Just wouldn't be a complete summer without the annual journey into the heart and soul of America's past and present. Hope to see you all along the road!! Cathy

After reading numerous books about Route 66, my dad and my 9 year old son and I took Spring Break 1998 and hopped in my dad's big Buick and drove from Tulsa to the Grand Canyon. The highlights of our trip were The Blue Whale and the Totem Pole Park in Oklahoma and sleeping in a wigwam at The Wigwam Motel in Arizona. We had such fun, but we went not knowing what to do or what to expect. Soon after our trip we found this website and printed out all the maps. In 1999, again at Spring Break, My son, now 10, and I did it again, this time in a 97 Mustang Convertible. The weather was great and we had lots of top down miles. We only stayed at the vintage authentic Route 66 motels, and we found the Blue Swallow in tucumcari a nice surprise, it's all being redone. Again we stayed at the Wigwam Motel and went to the Grand Canyon. On the way home we were caught in a snowstorm at Santa Rosa, NM and had to spend a night at the National Guard Armory with 600 other motorists, but it was fun anyway. We took a 4 day Oklahoma trip at Labor Day this year and may possibly take another quick trip at Spring Break next week. If you go on Route 66, stay in the authentic motels. Most of them are tacky but clean and cheap, too. It just adds to the experience. We have made a scrapbook of each trip with captions to all the pictures. We even have a playroom decorated in Route 66 wallpaper and Lucinda Lewis prints, and my private office at work is also decorated that way. There are few ways a dad and his son can find to be together and enjoy each other's company and find a common bond like an old fashioned road trip. I recommend it!

In 1992, it was the 66th anniversary of rt66 and the 50th anniversary of the Alaskan Highway. I couldn't figure out which to do so I did both (solo). I started in downtown Chicago, out the old parts of 66 to LA, up the Pacific Coast Highway to Washington, ferry to Alaska, 100 north of the Artic Circle and home on the Alaskan highway. Forty-nine days and 12,500 miles. Driving the old (slower, bumper, hillier) portions of route 66 sure makes you slow down and appreciate life a little more. I'm trying to talk some of my friends into a trip out 66 - maybe next year when gas is a little cheaper.

Recently relocating from RI to Southwestern IL and being a map buff, I was surprised to find out I was in Route 66 country. Finding out that I live about two miles from it and work right ON it was an even bigger surprise! One correction I would like to mention, however, is that the street referred to as "Broadwalk" in Venice, IL, just before reaching the McKinley Bridge into St. Louis, MO, is actually "Broadway Street". I thought people might want to know that so that they don't get lost.

I recently drove from Albuquerque to Oklahoma City on Interstate 40. I stopped to take several pictures of old US 66. One was an abandoned bridge near Glenrio. Does anyone know when I-40 was completed? I think the section near San Jon (pronounced San Hon) was one of the last, completed in about 1973 or 74. That would mean the abandoned bridge was still in use until about that time. I'm now interested in taking pictures of other abandoned highways and bridges. Thought it was weird, but I see other people have the same hobby. I hope to put some of my photos onto my web site pages soon.

I am starting to save for a trip along Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago and back again. I want to follow, as accurately as possible, the old Route. I need to know what items I should bring to insure the most enjoyable trip, as far as extra supplies to make sure the car makes it, money for inns, hotels, dinners and attractions...etc. Great site!!!

Thanks to your site and lots of research I travelled from Chicago to St. Louis this summer on Route 66, I printed out your detailed instructions and had them as backup for the custom map i highlighted the route on (and alternates) on a map program loaded into a laptop with GPS. The abandoned stretches were easy to find with todays technology.

Drove 66 from Williams, Az to Kingman, Az on 8/23. Stopped in Williams in one of those old style gas stations that was fully restored. The lady working there reminded me of Flo from "Alice". I bought a 25c pack of gum and had a quarter in my hand. She said "Twenty-seven." Being from PA, where there's no tax on food, I said, "I guess I should've known there was tax." She went off "taxes! Taxes!! Don't tell me about taxes!" ... the whole experience was like being in a Route 66 movie... now THERE'S an idea! I'll be back and plan to drive more of old 66!

Hey, this is a great site. Karen and I traveled to Oklahoma from Maryland a few weeks ago. We traveled part of 66 through Oklahoma cause that has been a dream of ours. We came back to Maryland a different route, using 66 as much as we could find throughout Missouri. Next time we will take the detailed map. We are from the era of the Route 66 show, we own a 2000 corvette convert and enjoyed our trip. 3700 miles worth and top down all the way.

Hi Everybody, I'm a huge fan of old 66 and really enjoyed your site. This past June, I drove 66 from Oklahoma City to the Windy City and back again. I live in Dallas, Texas, so OKC was the closest city to jump on to the mother road. Then in August, I went back to OKC and drove west to Amarillo, before heading back. I kept a journal along the way and took well over 400 photos of the 66, it's relics and anything else that grabbed my interest. I plan on heading out to L.A. to complete my journey in December and plan to have my website complete in January of 2001. I'd be grateful if you would visit my site at the link below and let me know you think. Also, I was wondering if you'd add a link to my page for other Route 66'ers to enjoy. I'll return the favor in my links. Thanks for your time and see you on 66, Chris Richey

I made my first trip (and not my last) on Route 66 in Feb. 1999. After getting divorced and meeting someone new and wonderful, I decided to move west. It was the perfect chance to take the trip I'd dreamed about for years! Unfortunately, it also meant leaving 4 wonderful children back in Louisville, Kentucky. Thank God for the road! Driving on Route 66 was healing for me - to travel at a more human pace than the interstates, to eat real food and sleep in real beds (and save a few bucks at the same time!), to see real sights and not manufactured ones. And to take pictures all along the way so I could share the trip with my kids. I got onto the track of the Mother Road in St. Louis and got turned around and befuddled before the day was through. What a great experience! I met some very helpful people, traveled on the Old Wire Road, and was able to realize something bigger and grander than myself in this world. All told, my trip to California was 2314 miles, over 900 of which I drove on actual Route 66 surfaces. The next time, I'm doing the whole thing. And not alone - I'd recommend traveling with a partner, not so much to share driving (although that would've been nice) but to help with navigating. Many thanks to Tom Snyder and Jack Rittenhouse for their wonderful books! And thanks also to all the wonderful people in Route 66 museums and businesses, to the people who've preserved the Mother Road, and to everyone who travels it. A big piece of my heart remains on the road, and I'll be back one of these days to pick it up.

In 1945 my parents brought me to California via the entire length of Route 66. Even though I was pretty young, I certainly remember staying in "igloos" and "teepees" along the route, among other things. In 2001 I plan to take the route again in my motorhome. Do any of you experienced 66-ers know of any portion that would be inappropriate for a 30' motorhome? Of course, I want to stop at (and maybe stay the night in) some of the special 66 locations. I'd love to hear from any of you who have recently experienced The Route and have some suggestions. Thanks!

It was a loosely planned trip into the south, south of here that is. Yes, the great USA and eventhough some people aren't partial to days of old, we are. Route 66 is America. The great nation of all the worlds creature comforts, but the road, Route 66, that is deeper. It digs into the very soul of what and who America is, was and should be. History is unlocked, as if discovered by a wanderer out to see the world, without any plan or care. There is a funny feeling in Williams, AZ. Arriving after a long day of driving, from Amarillo if I recall correct. Somehow the road simply injects it's aura and rich past into everyone who has the sense to appreciate what simple things stand for. It is embarrassing to admit that we discovered we had been on 66 for some time. From The Big Texan in Amarillo, to Williams, AZ we had no clue, that the road we were on was it, it being the root of America. A friendly local in Williams kindly pointed out directions for us, she motioned her finger down the street and I saw a sign, "Historic Route 66", and it all made sense. Fight for it guys, it's your history, being from Canada, I can attest that we have few genuine bloodlines, such as 66. Keep that feeling in everyone who passes over the miles of history, see and absorb America's roots and let everyone ,who deserves it, hear your story. Thanks a lot, take care of yourselves down there, perhaps more people need to have "that" feeling. Patrick and Danyel Bellango. Late summer, 1998.

I just finished perusing your Route 66 website and some of the links. I am taking a year off to do some traveling. My plans are to take almost 3 months and tour the USA on my motorcycle. I'm thinking of doing some of the western edge of 66, like Amboy to Arizona, then heading south to cross New Mexico, Texas and along the Gulf Coast and down to Key West. Then a long cruise up to Maine and into Canada. Then back down to Chicago -- may try to coordinate with the m/c rally that leaves Chicago annually along 66, but not sure. I will follow 66 this time headed west to about Reno, OK (or so). Then I turn north to make a run to North Dakota to visit my Dad's birthplace and family. Back again west to Glacier National Park and into Canada and Vancouver. Then the big drive south along the coast to my home in San Diego. I get the four corners pin.
