Ballard grain elevator demolished.

Postby swa on Sat Jan 21, 2006 7:15 pm

It is always a sad day when we loose a landmark on Route 66.

The ballard grain elevator has been demolised on Friday Januari 20th, 2006. It was most likely the last remaining structure of the ghost town of Ballard, IL.
The once 80 foot tall structure was located 4 miles southwest of Chenoa. Although the structure was not sound, demolishing is the least favorable way of dealing with historic structures.

They Could Have Let Us Known!

I'm not really sure WHY is had to come down. Perhaps it was classified as a clear and present danger. The fact that it has stood deserted this many years no doubt had a lot to do with it.

What irks me the most is that no one knew about it. I would have liked to have been there to record its demise. The first I heard about it was on Saturday.

This was a major thing to look for on our trips on 66 through Illinois. Alas, poor Ballard, I knew it well. But no more, no more, no more. To paraphrase a few stories.

I would like to know something about the town they refer to as Ballard. Was there an actual town, or was it the name of an owner, or just a railroad stop?

According to the Bloomington Pantagraph, the wood on one side of the elevator had started to rot. So I'm sure it was a safety issue. I think the grain company that owned it didn't want someone getting their kicks on 66 to be brained by the toppling elevator as he/she drove by.

Ballard knockdown

Sorry to see a landmark come down along Chicago St louis route. Elevator probably came down over UPRR concerns of collapse onto highspeed track. This is my first posting to your group. I think the Route 66 passageway is one for the Americana books. Too much is being lost... but how do you fight time?

From my point of view...Route 66 Chicago to St Louis doesn't exist without the Alton Route Railroad. Likewise, Amarillo TX to at least Kingman AZ courtesy the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. Look some of those photos up!
