IDOT to destroy historic bridge in Edwardsville, IL

In early March of 2006, supporters of the Route 66 Mother Road, preservationist, and the general public will lose an important Route 66 Landmark, if action is not taken now. Since 1918, this Railroad Overpass was the threshold through which travelers passed on their journey between California and Chicago on Route 66. This Landmark is located in Edwardsville, IL, near the old Edwardsville High School and is a vital part of Edwardsville's history.

This Landmark is to be demolished by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of a highway relocation project. The area will then to be filled with dirt, all at a great cost to taxpayers. Saving this Landmark will not impact the new highway.

This Landmark is actually part of the successful "Rails to Trails" program(Schoolhouse Trail) and can be utilized as part of the Trail instead of destroying it.

Please note that Route 66 has now received National Scenic Byways status from the Federal Highway Administration of which this project is a vital part.
