Suggestions for a first timer

Anyone have any suggestions for the first time traveling Route 66 from Los Angeles to Alburquerque New Mexico?
We are traveling with a dog will that be a problem?

Dog: check out the motels/hotels you want to stay at up front and make sure they allow pets.
I think the size of the dog is quite important in this. If it's a one of those fashion accessories Chihuahuas it'll be a lot easier than if it is a Great Dane.

In general for a first timer: take your time. Driving Route 66 is taking the slow choice in getting there and having fun. If the goal of the trip is to drive Route 66: take the attitude that you are at your destination from the moment your wheel is on Route 66. It takes that "we need to get somewhere" stress out of it.
If you try to race to a destination it'll be no fun at all (cause the Interstate is faster -but boring-).
